Stop Being Scared After Watching Scary Movies

Ever get a little freaked-out after watching a scary movie? Did that horror flick leave you feeling just a little jumpy? Did that scary monkey from Toy Story 3 make you jump? Don't worry - it's easy to curb your fright after watching a scary movie. All you have to do is brace yourself and think rationally.

Steps

  1. Remember this not real. It's supposed to scare you, and remember that it's just a trick; it's not real! You're no less safe than you were before. Keep in mind that all the scary things you just viewed were most likely computer effects or something similar. Remind yourself that it is not real.
  2. Watch something peaceful, funny, or nice afterward. Like 50 First Dates, or The Wedding Planner, or some chick-flick! Try comedies as well- they will make you laugh and lift your mood.
  3. Remember, the movie industry invested tons of effort in making their movies "real". Just keep remembering those are live actors and actresses, and nothing horrid can or did really happen, try to imagine the director suddenly yelling cut! Then then actor/actress taking off their mask and saying "What the heck. What now?" It helps you to realize that it is all just made up.
  4. After the movie think of all the fake and non scary things of the movie.
  5. Think of something positive or something you are doing the next day.
  6. Do an activity to get your mind off of it. Hang out with a friend, or be around family.
  7. Talk about the movie, as it really does help. Try to point out how it is impossible, and if the scary things did exist, why would they target you in particular?
  8. Imagine the scary scene over and over in your mind. Each time, make the scene less scary. For example, maybe the killer just jumped out of nowhere and killed someone. Think of when the killer stabbed the person. Next time, make them be poking them with a stick, next time they can be cat fighting etc. Each time just make it funnier. Pretty soon it will be hilarious! You won't be scared at all. Do this with each scary scene that has left you scared. Next time you watch the movie, you may be laughing your head off while everyone else is shaking in fear!
  9. If the movie is on DVD, try watching the behind-the-scenes special features. You will find that seeing how the movie was made will take a lot away from its scariness.
  10. When it seems creepy make fun of the movie with a friend. "Oh yeah, talk to the creepy stranger in a trench coat wearing a black hat- he'll be so nice!"
  11. When they say scary movies are based on a real story it's not true, they just say that to scare you even more. It is another attempt to give the movie scarier realism.
  12. Think of the psychological reasons why that particular film scared you. It'll remind you that it's all in your head.
  13. Remember that nothing like what happened to the characters has happened to you before. Why would it happen now? Why would zombies suddenly exist just after you watched a zombie movies and not before? And why would the zombies or monster just so happen to be in your town?

Tips

  • Watch funny movies after a scary movie or have your friends come over and make you laugh.
  • Think of happy, fun things to do with family or friends coming up in your life to look forward to.
  • Remember it's all about the mind, if you think to yourself "I'm really scared!" then 'coincidentally' things start happening, like shadows appearing, all because your thinking that, and your mind is playing tricks.
  • Try to imagine that someone you look up to, or someone really strong is there and picture them beating up the monster. It actually works.
  • Remember it's not real. Keep focused on the fact that it's a script, written by someone else, using their imagination. The actors and actresses starring in the movie are just acting out parts of a fictional tale.
  • Remember that these things don't happen in real life, for example: When have you heard someone say "someone pulled out my arm to hit me with it." It probably never happened.
  • Remember that it is not real,or talk to someone about it and tell them it's not real. Maybe an older member of the family.
  • Watch those shows where they show how they make scary costumes and such in movies, it'll help you understand everything better.
  • Sometimes it is best to watch a scary movie during a nice day. This will help prevent you from being as scared as you usually would be at night or during a thunderstorm.
  • The music can add to the tension quite a bit sometimes; try muting the TV on certain parts.
  • If you're scared during the movie, sing a really stupid song really quietly to yourself while something freaky is going on, like singing the unicorn song as the creeper kills someone. You can't help but laugh.
  • Another way is to imagine it coming out of somewhere, get up, walk over to it, look at it blankly (or get mad at it for bothering you)tell it to go away and quit being a pest, or imagine yourself killing it. like with the above, the only con is you may become dependent.
  • Watch the scene that scared you and imagine it as if it were funny.
  • In your mind, create a 'blooper reel' from the movie. When the two creepy twins say 'come play with us', imagine one of them sneezing halfway through and the other girl laughing her pants off. In the middle of a scream, someone starts to cough. The murderer drops the knife. the special effects guy messing around and making the demon look like his ex-wife. etc...
  • Know this: when an actors or actresses are in a scary movie, they enjoy it! They think of it like they finally get to be extreme. Running and screaming all the time like playing tag as kid, and hiding from the bad guy is just like playing "hide and seek" as a kid. They think it's just for fun. That's why you should, too!
  • Imagine the monster(s) looking goofy or silly: for instance, if it's a zombie, then imagine the zombie in a fluffy dress with pigtails.
  • If you can't sleep because of this close your eyes for one then two then three then four and so on seconds. This shows you you won't be killed in your sleep and no burglars will suddenly appear!
  • Look up pictures from the actors/ actresses in other movies. Maybe they play in a sad, romantic, or funny movie. Watch these movies and see the monster turn into a not-scary human being.
  • Focus on something elseĀ !! Try not to remember the scary scenes you saw. It's not real.
  • Laugh at all the horrible decisions each character makes.
  • Remember to have the light on when watching the scary movie then when its finished you don't have to think someones in the room with you (such as a monster).
  • Think of the horrible character in a circle with loads of other horror film characters and saying things like 'I don't want to be seen as horrible!'. Cry and explaining their problems and the other ones being like 'we're here for you!'.
  • Watch funny animal videos on YouTube. There are many of them, and at least one of them will make you laugh.
  • If a movie scares you, but you want to carry on watching it, watch it with friends or family and joke about all the scary bits. If you're still scared, leave it on in the background while you play a game. This way it won't scare you as much as you're not paying full attention to the film.

Warnings

  • Remember: You don't have to watch it. Only watch it if you want to.
