Steps
- Grab some drinking water and a very small amount of salt.
- Mix it until the water tastes like ocean water. Do not swallow the mixture.
- Put salt water into one of your palms, as much as it fits in there.
- Stick your nose deeply into it, until the nostrils are completely underwater.
- Slightly breath-in through your nose, sucking the water up. You will feel the water running up your nose until it finally comes back into your mouth.
- Spill it out.
- Repeat this procedure 5-6 times, as if you want to clean your nose with the water.
Another way is to get a tissue and rip off about one eighth of it, twirl it up, and stuff it up your nostril. It may not look nice, but your nose would not run.
Tips
- You may find it easier to get the salt water into your nose by using a neti pot, or one of the special bottles available for nasal washing, such as Nasopure. Such systems also have pre-mixed solutions that are the right balance to use safely. They also cleanse the nose more deeply as the water travels through the sinuses and out of the other nostril.
- The salt in the water will dry out the cells, responsible for creating the slimy stuff due to osmosis. Water moves out of the cells to make a smaller salt concentration in the saltwater.
- You may not feel an improvement immediately, but a little bit later (sometimes up to 30 minutes), so don't worry if it does not work right away!
Warnings
- Understand if your nose is raw from wiping it with tissues the salt water may prove to be painful.
- Make sure you "breath-in" the water carefully, because if you do it too fast and too strong, it will get into your lungs and you will certainly cough a lot.
