Stuff a Sleeping Bag

This is an essential skill for all who wish to go camping. Surprisingly easy, the art of the stuff bag is quick to master. This can also be applied to stuffing a tent into its bag.

Steps

  1. Hold the bag (the bag that your sleeping bag came in) with your weaker hand while holding your sleeping bag over the shoulder of your stronger hand.
  2. Insert the bottom of the sleeping bag into the stuff bag so that it is all the way at the bottom.
  3. Grab the sleeping bag with your stronger hand about a foot from the bottom. Stuff your fist holding the sleeping bag into the bottom of the stuff bag.
  4. Repeat step 3 until it becomes difficult to fit any more into the stuff bag.
  5. Begin stuffing the sleeping bag down the sides of the stuff bag, rotating it about 30 degrees each time you stuff.
  6. Pull the circular flap attached to the stuff bag over the opening at the top.
  7. Tighten the drawstring. You can use your knees to assist in holding the bag together while you are drawing it in.

Tips

  • If the drawstring doesn't stay closed, knot it tightly above the little plastic holder.
  • Remember to air out your sleeping bag when you are not camping by putting it in the large fluffy bag that it came with. If it did not come with a large fluffy bag, a big duffle works just as well. It's also a good idea to hang the sleeping bag up to air for a few days after camping before putting it into any bag.
  • Always use the right size bag. A stuff bag that is too small will not work!
  • Don't worry - you won't break either bag. Just keep stuffing!
