Sync Facebook Events to iCal

Facebook has great tools for reminding you of social events and of friends' birthdays. Still, what if you don't log onto Facebook every day? The good news is that Facebook events, including birthdays, can be pushed to your iCal (Calendar) application on your Mac, synced with your iOS device, or added to any other calendar application such as Google Calendars.

Steps

Syncing Events with iCal (Calendar) in OS X

  1. Open your Facebook Events page. You can quickly access this page by visiting facebook.com/events/upcoming/. Log in with your Facebook account if you aren't already.
  2. Look for the "Events Happening This Week" box. This is normally found on the right side of the Events page, underneath "Upcoming Birthdays".
  3. Find the small box underneath the "Events Happening This Week" box. You will see two links: "Upcoming Events" and "Birthdays".
  4. Click on the "Upcoming Events" link. This will launch Calendar immediately. If you want to sync the Birthdays calendar instead, click the "Birthdays" link.[1]
  5. Click "Subscribe." This will add the calendar to your Calendar app.
  6. Enter a name for the calendar into the "Name" field. Enter something like "Facebook Events" to help you organize your calendars.
    • You can select a color for the calendar's events using the menu to the right of the "Name" field.
  7. Select the location for the calendar. If you want the calendar to sync with all of your iOS and OS X devices, select the "iCloud" option.
  8. Uncheck "Alerts" (optional). This will allow you to change your notification settings for your Facebook events.
  9. Use the "Auto-refresh" menu to select how often the calendar should update. If your events change often, increase how often the calendar refreshes.
  10. Click . to save your changes. After a few moments, your Facebook events should appear in your calendar.

Syncing Events with Your iOS Device

    • Make sure to log into the app with your Facebook account after installing it.
  2. Open the Settings app.
  3. Scroll down and tap "Facebook".
  4. Log in with your Facebook account if you aren't already.
  5. Toggle the "Calendars" option "ON".
  6. Open the Calendars app.
  7. Tap the "Calendars" button at the bottom of the screen.
  8. Scroll through the list to find the "Facebook" calendars.
  9. Tap the calendars that you want to display. When calendars are displayed, they have a checkmark (✓) next to the calendar name.

Syncing Events with Your Google Calendar

  4. Right-click on the "Upcoming Events" link and select "Copy link address" or "Copy URL". If you want to sync the Birthdays calendar instead, right-click the "Birthdays" link.
  5. Open the Google Calendar website. You can access this at calendar.google.com.
  6. Click the down arrow (▼) next to "Other calendars". This is located on the left side of the Calendar page.
  7. Select "Add by URL". This will open a new window.
  8. Paste the copied Facebook Calendar URL into the box. Click "Add calendar" to add it to your Google Calendar.
  9. Wait a moment for the calendar to import. You will see a message informing you that the calendar was successfully imported.
  10. Adjust the calendar settings. Once the calendar has been imported, you can adjust the settings for it. Hover over the Facebook Calendar in your list of calendars and click the down arrow (▼) that appears.
    • You can select a new color for the calendars events from the list.
    • Select "Calendar settings" to change the calendar's name, share it with others, and change the notification settings.

Tips

  • Keep in mind that this method is not a true sync since you can't update the events on your computer and have them correctly updated to Facebook. It is essentially a one-way publish. Every time something is updated on Facebook, it will be pushed to your calendar, but changes won't go the other way.
