Tie a Cow Hitch

Ever wanted to know how to hitch a cow? The knot is similar to the clove hitch except instead of tying the two half-hitches in the same direction, they are tied in opposing directions. It's not just for hitching cows, though. This knot's used to connect loop-ended lanyards to handheld electronic equipment, and to attach loops of cable to the back of a pick-up truck during a shovel move.[1]

Steps

  1. Take the working end (the free end) and drape it over the pole, from back to front.
  2. Bring the end around behind and to the left of the standing (fixed) end.
  3. Bring the working end around to the front of the pole or ring and to the right of the standing (fixed) end.
  4. Take the working end around behind the pole or ring and pull it through the bight (loop).
  5. Pull both ends tight. Your cow is now hitched.

Tips

  • This knot is also known as a lark's head and cable-man's hitch.
