Tie a Cow Hitch
Ever wanted to know how to hitch a cow? The knot is similar to the clove hitch except instead of tying the two half-hitches in the same direction, they are tied in opposing directions. It's not just for hitching cows, though. This knot's used to connect loop-ended lanyards to handheld electronic equipment, and to attach loops of cable to the back of a pick-up truck during a shovel move.
Steps
- Take the working end (the free end) and drape it over the pole, from back to front.
- Bring the end around behind and to the left of the standing (fixed) end.
- Bring the working end around to the front of the pole or ring and to the right of the standing (fixed) end.
- Take the working end around behind the pole or ring and pull it through the bight (loop).
- Pull both ends tight. Your cow is now hitched.
Tips
- This knot is also known as a lark's head and cable-man's hitch.
