Tie a Tie Half Windsor

An alternative to the four in hand method of tying a tie is the half Windsor knot. This knot is larger, resembles a triangle, and is considered to be more distinguished than the four in hand version (but not as distinguished as the full Windsor). Most men prefer the half Windsor because it isn't as bulky to wear.

Steps

Half Windsor Knot #1

  1. Face the mirror and place the tie around your neck. The wide end should drape down about {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} below the thin end to begin.
  2. Loop the wide end around the narrow end. Bring the wide end over the narrow end, then behind it, creating a loop.
  3. Tuck the wide end into the neck loop. Start by lifting it out in front of your body, then flip it over and tuck it into the space between the tie and your collar.
  4. Cross the wide end over the narrow end. Bring it out to the front, then cross it over the narrow end from right to left.
  5. Bring the wide end up through the loop. Tuck it upward between the tie loop and your collar.
  6. Finish the knot. Pull the wide end down through the knot at the front of the tie. Tighten it and adjust the tie so that the knot has a symmetrical shape.
  7. Adjust the tie. Tighten the tie around your collar by pulling on the narrow side of the tie, which should now be hidden underneath the wide side of the tie. If your tie has a carrier loop underneath the wide side of the tie, you may slide the narrow side through that loop to prevent it from "peeking" from behind the wide side of the tie.

Half Windsor Knot #2

  1. Fold up your collar and drape the tie around your neck. The wide end of the tie should be on your dominant side. It should be longer than the narrow end and the seem should be facing you.
  2. Cross the wide end over the narrow end. Cross at the top so you will have lots of tie left to actually tie the knot.
  3. Cross the wide end back under the narrow end so the seam is not facing you. Cross it under right below the place that you crossed it over.
  4. Bring the end of the wide end of the tie towards the neck loop at the top. Put it through and pull it all the way through. Hold the wide end off to your dominant side.
  5. Cross the wide end of the tie in front of everything to create a knot.
  6. Put the end of the wide end of the tie under the neck loop then push it up through the neck loop from underneath.
  7. Place the end of the wide end of the tie through the knot and pull all the way tight. To tighten, pull on the narrow end and push up on the wide end. Adjust as needed and then fold down your collar. You're ready to go!

Tips

  • In Method 1, you may need to experiment with Step 1 to achieve the right length for the sides of the ties. This will get you the desired length of the tie at Step 5.
