Tighten Curls

So, loose curls may be in... but not for some of us. This article will teach you how to get your waves into banana curls, fast.

Steps

  1. Wash your hair. This is very important because most curling irons clearly state that your hair should be clean, dry, and free of styling products. Use extra conditioner as all the appliances you'll use will dry out your hair a little.
    • Get hair wet with warm water.
    • Pour out a generous amount of conditioner made for curly hair (like Bumble & Bumble Curl Conscious & Matrix Curl.Life Defining System) into your palm.
    • Saturate hair from root to ends with the conditioner. Then massage your scalp.
    • Leave the conditioner on for 10 minutesĀ ; longer if your hair is more damaged.
    • Wash the conditioner out with warm water, then follow with a cold water rinse. Cold water will seal the cuticle and help it lay flat which boosts shine.
  2. Squeeze out excess moisture from your hair. You may want to blot with a cotton towel or even paper towels. But do NOT rub your hair with a towel or put your hair in a towel turban because this will add extra frizz. Comb hair with a wide tooth comb until it's practically straight.
  3. Wrap little sections of your hair around your fingers so it curls loosely, and repeat over most of your head. This way, there will be some basis for the tightening.
  4. Blow dry, but not with your head upside down, and use the lowest setting, until your hair is dry. Hopefully, the very loose curls will still be there.
  5. Finger comb your hair a little bit, to avoid annoying tangles, and to test that the curl basis stays. Don't use an actual comb, though. Meanwhile, get your curling iron ready, and put your hair in tight rollers for extra hold if you like.
  6. Once the curling iron is ready, take out the rollers and comb your hair CAREFULLY with a wide tooth comb.
  7. Wind small sections of your hair around the curling iron for about 20 seconds apiece. Ask a friend to help with the back.
  8. Use a little bit of hairspray to hold in place. Hold the can a few inches away from your head, though, not right up against it.
  9. Finished.

Tips

  • For extra volume use a volumizing hair spray at the roots.
  • As an alternate you can use jelly rollers, but results could vary.
  • To make curls tight and beautiful, you could also use children's detangling spray, as it will make your hair glow and it'll make your curls tight and very smooth.

Warnings

  • If you do this every day, it will damage your hair.
