Turn Frizzy Curls Into Beautiful Twirls

Having crazy, frizzy curls isn't always fun, but with a little care and time, you can have ringlets that shine with all their strength. Here's a guide on turning monster frizz into glossy goddess curls that will look amazing.

Steps

  1. Wash your hair 2-3 times a week. Shampoo dries out hair, which causes all that frizz! When you wash use only a little bit of shampoo, and plenty of conditioner. Look for shampoo products that do not contain sodium, laureth, or sulfate, - this is what makes the shampoo sudsy, and dries out your curls. Massage your scalp vigorously to work out the flakes and improve blood circulation - you'll see the difference in a few weeks.
  2. After washing out your conditioner, comb through your hair with a wide tooth comb. Comb through your hair *before* you rinse out the conditioner.
  3. When drying, don't rub your hair vigorously with your towel, or it will frizz up. Try scrunching the dampness out by making fists with the towel in your palms, squeezing handfuls of hair, removing excess product and water (so it isn't weighed down). By doing this the towel will soak up most of the water.
  4. Always follow up with a high quality leave-in conditioner. Curly hair is thirsty for moisture, and frizz is a result of the individuals hairs sticking out in search of that moisture. If you have fine hair, a drugstore brand leave-in conditioner will work well. For coarse, thick hair, consult your hair stylist to find a rich creamy leave-in that will weigh down your curls a bit.
  5. Finish with an non-sticky styling lotion like Bumble & Bumble curl crème or Bedhead Curls Rock. Pump a small amount into your hands, and rub them together so that it is spread evenly on your hands.
  6. Tilting your head to one side, smooth the product into your hair, in sections. Remember to apply with your fingertips, as applying with your palms can lead to over application and stickiness. Work through your hair section by section, and when the product has been distributed evenly, scrunch to your heart's content.
  7. Let your hair air dry, and DO NOT TOUCH IT while it is drying, or after it dries. It's OK to lift at the roots if it looks a little flat on top, but do this sparingly. If you must blow dry, use a diffuser, and only long enough to prevent the hair from soaking the back of your shirt.
  8. Once it has dried, you may want to put it in a clip, a mini-ponytail, or the like. Or, you can just let it down! Curly hair is truly versatile. But however you decide to fix your hair, don't brush or comb it after it dries, because your curls will probably frizz right back up.

Tips

  • Avoid towel drying your hair. This could cause more frizziness in the end. Try letting your hair air dry instead.
  • Avoid mousse and gel, they will make your hair sticky and stiff. No one admires that early 90s look.
  • Although many people say to cut curly hair at a shoulder length, don't. It does not look good, especially if it is frizzy. Try cutting a little on the side for bangs like manga characters have. Cut so that its long on the back. That way, it weighs the front of your head down a little, while you have beautiful length in the back. Enjoy!
  • By scrunching in sections, it ensures you won't miss any spots.
  • Your hair cut means a lot! A good hair cut for curly hair is usually layered. It creates a look that is balanced and doesn't weigh you down.
  • Try using argon oil. It doesn't exactly make your hair curly, but it does tame it.
  • If you're good to your curls and feed them lots of leave-in conditioner, the ends will not split as often as your straight-haired friends. Only go for a trim when it feels like you're wearing a sweater on your head.
  • Leave-in conditioner is the key to taming your curls. Talk to your hair stylist to learn whether you need a light or heavy leave-in conditioner.
  • After a shower, air dry your hair then apply hairspray. Try to separate each curl and spray it individually until it sticks.

Warnings

  • Be prepared for perfect strangers to pull your ringlets, just to watch them spring back into place.
  • If your hair is permed, do not use this guide. You need to use special products for your hair, such as conditioner created especially for permed or color treated hair.
