Travel from East Bank to Terminal 1 at Minneapolis‐St Paul International Airport (MSP) via Minneapolis Metro

If you near the East Bank station in Minneapolis, you have a variety of options to get to Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport (MSP). This wikiHow will help you get from East Bank to the airport's station on the Metro.

Steps

Getting to MSP

  1. Purchase a Minneapolis Metro light rail ticket. All stations have working fare-card purchase machines that can take cash, but Minneapolis' Metro also has an app you can use to purchase and store your ticket.
    • Each ticket allows for two and a half hours of uninterrupted riding.[1]
  2. Board a Green line train in the direction of Minneapolis at the East Bank station. The station side nearest to the Graduate Hotel should take you in the direction you want to go to. You can also listen to announcements for track changes.
    • If you end up getting on the wrong train (going towards St. Paul), you'll have to travel back through the East Bank station. If you've traveled into Stadium Village or Prospect Park, you've gone the wrong way.
  3. Ride the Green line no more than two stops to the U.S. Bank Stadium stop. You'll stop at West Bank on the way.[2] Here, you'll have to transfer over to a new train.
    • If you continue on the Green line into stops at Government Plaza or Nicollet Mall by mistake, you can also transfer there.
  4. Get out when you reach U.S. Bank Stadium and walk to the opposite platform. You'll get off onto one platform then walk across to the platform on the other side of the oncoming train going the opposite way.
  5. Transfer over to a Blue line train going in the direction of Mall of America.
    • If you accidentally get on a Blue line train in the wrong direction, towards Target Field, get out at the next stop and go back the other way.
  6. Ride the Blue line through several stations to the Lindbergh-Terminal 1 station. Ride it through Cedar-Riverside, Franklin, Lake St/Midtown, 38th St, 46th St, 50th St/Minnehaha Park, VA Medical Center, and Port Snelling; then watch the train dip underground to stop at the Terminal 1 station.

Getting to Terminal 1

  1. Get out and walk to the nearest escalator. Look for signage towards the escalator. You can generally follow the crowd at a steady pace.
  2. Head up the escalator. If you need an elevator instead, there is one in the back of the escalator; you'll most likely have to switch elevators across the hallway since these two elevators don't connect at the same point on all floors at the Transit building.
  3. Take the elevator that will lead you to the Terminal 1 Entrance shuttle.
  4. Walk down the hallway in the direction of signs towards Terminal 1's entrance/shuttle.
    • Watch for digital signs reading "Shuttles to Terminal 1 entrance in (x) minutes". After walking down the hallway, when you begin seeing areas with door openings and computer monitors with "Entrance shuttles in (x) minutes" digital readout boards, you'll know you're on the right track.
  5. Get into the shuttle and sit down. If it is full, you may ride standing up, holding onto the handles above your head.
  6. Get out at the entrance for Terminal 1. Follow the crowd heading to the TSA security checkpoint. The train makes these two trips back and forth, stopping each time on the opposite side.

Tips

  • Estimated cost of a regular ticket is about $2, with half cost fares for certain reduced fare passengers.
  • Average time of travel on the Metro is about 35 minutes;[3] however, if you mess up and travel further, you may end up at 45 minutes to an hour. Plan accordingly.
    • If you mess up and travel past Lindbergh-Terminal 1 towards Humphrey-Terminal 2, don’t worry; this segment is fare-free.[4]
