Turn off a Street Light

Sick of that street light coming in your window when you're trying to sleep? Here's the way to turn it off and finally go to sleep or get back to what you were doing.

Steps

  1. Grab a laser pointer or other very bright hand held light.
  2. Locate the photocell at or near the top of the street light. It will look like a small cylinder.
  3. Direct your light source at the photocell and wait a few seconds. You may need to do this from multiple angles to achieve your goal.
  4. Your street light should now be turned off for 7 to 10 minutes.
  5. If you find that the light has turned back on, simply start again at step two.

Tips

  • It may take a few minutes to find the correct angle to turn off the light.
  • The stronger and more directed the beam, the more likely you will be to affect the photocell.

Warnings

  • Doing this many times may result in your fully disabling the photocell on the light, therefore disabling the light fully. While this may solve your problem more permanently, it is unlawful and unkind to your city wire men.
  • When pointing a laser into the sky be sure that there are no aircraft in the area. The authorities take a very strong stance against pointing lasers at aircraft.
  • If you get caught you could face criminal charges for vandalism.

Things You'll Need

  • A very strong hand-held light source.
