Twitter founder at CMU

Last week, Twitter co-founder and executive chairman Jack Dorsey visited Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) to recruit students for his new mobile payment startup called Square Inc. He met with Computer Science faculty and students where he shared his thought on opportunities at his new company:

“We started with ten people, quickly grow to 400 and now we are expanding since we begins to grow internationally. None of us worked in the financial industry before but our goal is to make financial transactions as effortless as possible for individuals, small businesses and large organizations. We need more Computer Science and Software Engineering graduates as we are expanding our company globally. Few years ago, when I started Twitter with twenty then four hundred people but now we have several thousands and still continue to grow. We always need more skilled people …”

Dorsey later shared his thoughts on entrepreneurs. He said: “Being an entrepreneur is an attitude not a job. Anyone can be an entrepreneur but to succeed you need knowledge and skills. An entrepreneur recognizes opportunities and seizes them before other even know that it exists. Today opportunities are at the intersections of technology and society and entrepreneur brings people to that intersection faster than anyone else.”

Dorsey mentioned that he likes CMU students: “We recruit from schools that are a good fit for the challenges we face, schools that emphasizes on project-based work such as capstone projects and CMU students are very helpful to our success.”

Several former CMU students also accompanied him in this trip. Jim Puls, a CMU computer science graduates explained to other students: “The people at CMU taught me to have an appreciation for doing things right.” He confirmed that the training at CMU was tough and as student, he had to work very hard but it was a good investment for what he has achieved today.
