Use Google Goggles

Google Goggles is an image recognition application created by Google for Android-based devices and is also included as a feature in the Google Mobile app for iPhones. The app allows you to snap photos using your device’s camera and receive information based on the object, text, or location in the image. This article will guide you through the process of using the Google Goggles app on your device of choice.

Steps

Android Users

  1. Follow steps 1-6 of How to Download Google Goggles to download the app to your device.
  2. Tap the Google Goggles icon from the home screen to launch the app. You will automatically be taken to your device’s camera from within the app.
  3. Snap a photo using the onscreen shutter button or your device’s hardware shutter. Currently the app is best at recognizing certain objects such as landmarks, books & DVDs, logos, artwork, and barcodes. The app will now take a few seconds to analyze the image.
  4. Browse through the search results by swiping up and down.

iPhone Users

  1. Follow steps 1-6 of How to Download Google Goggles to download the Google Mobile app to your iPhone.
  2. Tap the Google Mobile app icon from your iPhone’s home screen to launch the app.
  3. From within the “Search” tab, click the small camera icon next to the search bar.
    • If it is your first time using the feature, you may be prompted to accept the terms of service by clicking “Accept." You will also have to sign into your Google account if you decide to enable search history.
  4. Snap a photo of an object, text, logo, or landmark by tapping the small camera button. The app will automatically analyze the photo. You can click the most important part of the photo to force the app to focus on that particular aspect of the image.
  5. Click the search result that best fits your criteria.
  6. Browse through search results by swiping up and down.



Tips

  • You get information for a number of different objects and places including, but not limited to, text such as menu items, book covers, landmarks, artwork, logos, and wine bottle labels.

Things You’ll Need

  • An iPhone running iOS 4.0+ or an Android device running version 1.6+ with an auto-focusing camera.
  • The Google Mobile app for iPhone or Google Goggles app for Android.

Warnings

  • Google Goggles is currently only available for Android and iOS based devices.
