Use Polyvore

Polyvore is an online community of taste makers where people around the world can discover their style and set trends. Trendseekers and shoppers alike come to Polyvore to discover brands, products, trends and looks.

Polyvore's easy-to-use virtual styling tool lets you mix and match products from any online store to create fashion collections called "sets".

After you have created a set, you can publish and share it with your friends and the Polyvore community.

Steps

The Basics

  1. Go to Polyvore. It should look similar to the picture on the right.
  2. Create an account. This is optional. You can still create sets even without an account. But to be able to save drafts, your designs, use the forum, etc. you are obligated to have an account. Select "Register" at the top right corner of the page and enter the information they ask you. If you have a Facebook account, you can connect with it instead of filling in the blanks.
  3. Begin designing! Follow the steps below to create your own fashion set.

Create a Set

  1. Select "Create a Look" on the homepage. It should lead you here. The Polyvore editor lets you create sets using a variety of items. Think of it as a very simple collage editor.
  2. Type in your search. In the search box provided, type in an item for your collage, such as heels, purses, and tank tops. Or you can browse by a category: dresses, outerwear, shorts, and jewelry.
    • You may open new tabs if you wish. It is located on the top of the search.
    • To select a price range, it is located on the top right of the search. The price ranges are as follows: under $50, $50-100, $100-250, $250-500, $500-1,000, and over $1,000.
    • To redefine your search, use the color palette containing 70 colors.
    • Go to the next page by selecting the arrow on the right.
  3. Click and drag the items. Once you find the item you choose, click and drag it onto the blank space on the left. To view the name, price, website, details and/or to save it to your items, click on the item.
  4. Resize the items. Click and drag the outer corners to the desired size. Then arrange the items together again.
  5. Rotate the items. Click the top center circle, and rotate them to any way you want.
  6. Arrange your items. You can flop, flip, remove the background, clone, forward, or backward your items.
  7. Select the font and edit the text. Click on the Text category to view the variety of fonts. Edit the text and choose a color.
  8. Finish by clicking "Publish." If you have an account, publish it for the whole community of Polyvore to see! To save it to work on it later on, select "Save Draft" instead.

Import Your Own Items to Polyvore

  1. Install the Clipper Tool. To install, go to the Clipper.
  2. Drag the link to your Bookmarks. A link will be there. Simply drag it to your Bookmarks Toolbar.
  3. Use the Clipper. Visit another site, click the "Clip to Polyvore" bookmark, and the Polyvore drop-down will appear. When you rollover an available image, a green border will appear. Click the image to add it. A thumbnail will appear in the drop-down. Select "Import," and you're finished!

Tips

  • Essentially, the more active you are on Polyvore the more recognition you gain.
  • Keep your older sets. This will allow you to see how much you have improved and grown in the art of making sets.
  • To get your collection featured on the Polyvore homepage or blog, send it to trends@polyvore.com. Please make sure your collection has a useful title and description. Topics that they're interested in are:
    • Trends on the Rise - up & coming trends and how to wear them
    • Pop Culture Watch - topics related to movies, TV, books, and music
    • Tricky Trend - advice on how to wear a difficult trend
    • Celeb Style - tips on how to get a particular celebrity's look
    • Around the World - street style reports from your hood
    • Up & Coming Designers - product and sets featuring a hot new brand or designer
    • Stores to Know - products and sets from your favorite places to shop
    • Key Wardrobe Piece - a great versatile item of clothing and different ways to wear it
    • Current Events - topics related to what's going on in the world right now
  • Make beautiful sets to help promote your group contests. Make frequent contests using current trends keep people active. Members love trophy icons, so don't rest until you get 50 members in each contest!
  • Don't clutter your sets with multiple items, but don't leave too many gaps either. Make it looks organized and neat.
  • Ask Polyvore members to join your group by sending the member a message with a link to your group, asking them to join. Keep in mind that some members might not want to join groups, so you should be respectful of this and not send them messages.
  • The more you comment and favorite other sets, the more comments and favorites you will tend to receive. Polyvore is a great place to create friendships, so be nice when commenting sets!
  • Be creative and have fun!
  • There are many templates in the template gallery. To make a template, click on the arrow next to the 'Create' link at the top of your page and select 'a template.' In the editor, click on the 'Add Placeholder' button, then click 'Publish template.'
  • Sizing and layering your items are important. Try to keep smaller items in the outside and bigger items in the center. This will make your eyes travel all through the set.

Warnings

  • Do not upload photos of yourself unless you are okay with other people using those photos. All items on Polyvore are considered public.
  • Make sure to not copy other people's sets and pretend they're yours.
  • Sets and items that violate any of these rules will be deleted. People who abuse Polyvore will have their accounts deleted.
  • Promotion of violence or hateful speech is not allowed.
  • Do not create adult content. No pornography, full frontal nudity, adult paraphernalia, or sexually explicit language.
  • Do not send chain mail or spam in messages or comments.
