Use the Ford Active ParkAssist Feature

Everyone says that parallel parking is tough. But if you have a Ford car that has this feature, you won't feel this same way. This article will tell you how to use what Ford calls their Active ParkAssist feature.

Steps

  1. Drive your Ford car, as you normally would, prior to trying to park.
  2. Realize that with the Ford Active ParkAssist, you can only use it to parallel park with ease. You can't use it to park in a parking spot, such as a parking spot in a parking lot.
  3. Push the "Auto |P|" button. Wait for the light to be lit. This will ask the car to engage this setting.[1]
  4. Flick on the turn signal in the direction you'd like to find a spot big enough for. You car will then sense when a big enough spot is available on that side and will alert you via audible tones to when it has found a suitable spot.[2]
    • The feature will look for spots that 1.2 times the size of the Ford vehicle you are driving.[3]
  5. Follow it's directions and Pull Forward just a small bit past the car in front of the space. You'll see it's directions in the display screen.[4]
  6. Stop driving temporarily. Put your foot on the brake. The brake will be the only thing you'll need to worry about when using this feature.
  7. Put the car in reverse and take your hands off the steering wheel.[5]
  8. Wait for the sensors to beep several times. A quickening flicker sound is the sound you should wait for.
  9. Stop the car, when you hear the sound. Depress the break pedal to stop the car from being in reverse.
  10. Shift the car into Drive mode once more.[6]
  11. Take your foot off the brake pedal and let it inch forward.
  12. Repeat the process of backing up and pulling forward until the system tells you that it is finished. This is especially common for tight spaces.[7]
  13. Wait for the display to say "ParkAssist finished".
  14. Push the "Auto |P|" feature button to turn off the feature. The light should not be on.

Tips

  • You can also use the accelerator to quicken the pace of the car's parking assistance when backing up or pulling forward, but don't ever touch the steering wheel when you have engaged this feature.
  • If you don't have your blinker on, the car will default to parking on the right side of the street. So, make sure you put your turn signal on in the direction you'd like to park in.

Warnings

  • Don't ever try to turn on this feature, when taking your driver's license test, or it will be an automatic-failure!
  • Sometimes the vehicle can find illegal spots. Be careful that you aren't parking in one of these spots (fire hydrant, school zone, crosswalk, etc.).
  • Don't always depend on the ParkAssist to find a suitable spot big enough for the vehicle. Use your common sense, and watch for other cars nearby when allowing your car to use this feature.
