Write to a Dutch Girl

You are not from the Netherlands but you want to write to someone who is. The most proper thing you could do is to show you know a little bit about the country and its people.

Steps

  1. Start your letter or email with 'Beste' or 'Lieve' and then the name of the addressee. You use 'Beste' when you're not really familiar with the person you are writing to or when you are distant friends, use 'Lieve' when you feel a certain attraction for the person you are writing to.
  2. End your letter or email with ´Groetjes van (your name)´ or ´liefs van (your name)´. You use ´Groetjes´ when you´re not really familiar with the person you are writing to or when you are distant friends, use ´Liefs´ when you feel a certain attraction for the person you are writing to. You can also use "met vriendelijke groet" to keep it formal.
  3. Most Dutch people can read English just fine, just remember not to use too many idioms, or difficult words, keep it plain and simple.
  4. Dutch people probably know more about your country than you know about their country. Be interested, they are most likely more than willing to tell you anything you want to know.
  5. Dutch people are straight forward people, so tell them what you want to tell them. They will know if you're hiding something.
  6. The Netherlands is a small country, Dutch people are generally very much interested in your country.
  7. Dutch people like very salty candy, be careful when accepting Liquorice in particular from girls at nightclubs
