Add Clip Art to Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word provides users with a library containing a wide variety of clip art images which come in handy if you do not have your own art to include in your document. Perhaps you need a picture to illustrate a point, or a colorful border to add to a document's header. Know how to add clip art to Microsoft Word documents in order to add color to your presentation, publication or other document.

Steps

Insert Clip Art in Microsoft Word 2003 for Windows or 2004 for Mac

  1. Click the position in the document where you want to add your clip art.
  2. Go to the "Insert" Menu.
  3. Select the "Picture" sub menu.
  4. Click the "Clip Art�" option. The Clip Gallery dialog box will appear.
  5. Find the clip art you want to use in your Clip Gallery.
    • If you have images on your computer that aren't in the gallery, click the "Import�" button to find them on the computer and copy them into the Clip Gallery. (Note that this can duplicate the images.)
    • If can't find the kind of image you want, click the "Online�" button. (Note that you'll have to download the image, then click the "Import�" button to import it.)
  6. Select the clip art you want to add, and click "Insert".
  7. Close the Clip Gallery, and save your document. Your image will be in your Word document.

Insert Clip Art in Word 2007 or Word 2010 for Windows

  1. Click the location in the document where you want to place the clip art.
  2. Go to the "Insert" tab.
  3. Find the "Pictures" group.
  4. Select the "Clip Art" option. The clip art task pane will appear.
  5. Search your clip art for an image for what you have in mind. You can limit your search to a specific clip art collection by entering a category in the "Search In" box; enter a word such as "holidays," "sports," "business," and so on. Click an image to insert it.
    • If some clip art files on your computer are not appearing in the task pane, click "Organize clips�" to import them.
    • If you don't have any clip art for what you have in mind, click "Clip�art�on�Office�Online" to search the Microsoft Office database. When you find one you like, double-click and select "Copy." Then go to your document and select "Paste."
  6. Close the clip art task pane, and save your document.

Add Clip Art in Word 2008 for Mac

  1. Go to the "View" menu.
  2. Select the "Object Palette" option.
  3. Click the "Clip Art" button.
  4. Search for the clip art you want.
  5. Drag the image to where you want to put it in your Word document.
  6. Save your file.

Insert Clip Art in Word 2011 for Mac

  1. Click the "Show or Hide Media Browser" button on your Standard toolbar. (It has music notes and film in the image.)
  2. Select the "Clip Art" tab.
  3. Look through the available clip art to find the image you want to use.
  4. Drag the image to your desired location in the Word document.
  5. Save your file.

Warnings

  • Generally, images included on your computer and found in free image directories are only available for personal use. That means you can't use them for commercial purposes. If creating a letterhead for a business or bookmarks to sell, you must get a "commercial license" for that art. Some art also requires that royalties from the art's use be paid to the owner of the image's copyright. Always track down an image's license before using it for commercial purposes.
