Add Fade in iMovie

The Apple iMovie program is a video editing system that allow users to import their own videos and images, edit said videos and images, as well as add effects, music, and titles to create a professional movie project. Unfortunately, older iMovie programs did not come with a basic fade in/fade out feature. The following steps will show you how to create that effect by using iMovie's transition options for a quick fade in/fade out fix.

Steps

  1. Open your iMovie program and select the iMovie project you want to add a fade to. You will see your iMovie project's video clips as a timeline in the video editing section of the iMovie screen located in the upper left hand quadrant.
  2. Go to the "Windows" tab located along the top pane of your iMovie program.
  3. Scroll down the menu and select the "Transitions" option (for Mac users the shortcut is "Command -> 4"). This will bring up a "Transitions" screen located at the bottom right hand corner of the iMovie project quadrant. This "Transitions" section will show you a list of transitioning options to add to your iMovie project. These transitions editing effects can be put in front of, in between, or at the end of your video clips or images to create a smoother transitioning effect.
  4. Select the "Fade Through Black" transition option.
  5. Click and drag the "Fade Through Black" transition effect to place it in the video clips viewing/editing timeline.
  6. Place the "Fade Through Black" transition effect in front of the video clip or image you want to add the fade in to. Place the "Fade Through Black" transition effect behind the video clip or image you want iMovie to add a fade out to within your iMovie project.
  7. Click on the very beginning of the video clip viewing/editing timeline section located on the upper left quadrant of your iMovie project (directly before the fade in transition effect you have just added) and press the "Space" bar on your keyboard. This will activate the iMovie playback feature so you can preview your work and fine-tune it accordingly.

Tips

  • There is also a "Fade Through White" transition if you choose to add a white fade in/out to your iMovie project. To achieve the white fade in/out, follow the same steps as listed above except instead of dragging the "Fade Through Black" transition effect to your video clips or images, choose the "Fade Through White" option.
  • If you are using a newer version of iMovie, there is a fade in/fade out effect pre-installed onto your program. To achieve the fade in/fade out simply start a new iMovie project, select "No Theme" for the template, then select the "Fade to Black" option in the "Automatically Add" menu located near the bottom right hand side of the new project window. Once you drag your video clips into the viewing/editing timeline, iMovie will automatically create a fade in/fade out for you.
  • Be sure to save your iMovie project before closing so the fade in/out transitions you have just added will be applied and resume the next time you open that iMovie project for editing, exporting, or sharing. *Note*: Some of the latest versions of iMovie save your projects automatically.
