Add Tumblr to Wordpress

WordPress is a popular open-source blogging platform that has been available since 2003. It allows users to input their text into a template system that easily updates their blog from a computer or mobile phone. WordPress also allows you to integrate your other social media networks into your blog's homepage. Through placing the appropriate widget, a programmed box that adds features to your page, in your WordPress template, you can incorporate Tumblr into your blog. Tumblr is a micro-blogging program, similar to Facebook. Users can post videos, text, photos and links on a private or public page. The process and results are different depending upon if your WordPress account is hosted by WordPress.com or if it is self-hosted. This article will tell you how to add Tumblr to WordPress in both cases.

Steps

  1. Log in to your Tumblr account.
    • If you do not have a Tumblr account, go to the Tumblr homepage, type in your email, a password and specify your URL address. Click the green button to start micro-blogging.
  2. Find your Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feed address. An RSS feed publishes content in a standardized form. The form is a feed of updates as they are posted. Copy the URL address on your Tumblr homepage. Add "/rss/" to the end of your address.
  3. Sign into your WordPress blog account in another tab on your Internet browser.
    • If you do not have a WordPress blog, go to the WordPress home page and click on the orange button that says "Get Started Here." It will take you through the sign up process.
  4. Click on "My Account" on the left side of the tool bar at the top of the page.
  5. Scroll down your WordPress dashboard. Your dashboard is the vertical list on the left side of the page. Find the "Appearance" Tab. There should be a number of options underneath "Appearance." If you do not see other options, click on the arrow on the Appearance tab.
  6. Select "Widgets" from the Appearance menu.
  7. Find "RSS" from the list of available widgets. It may also be found in the list of "Inactive Widgets" at the bottom.
  8. Click and drag the RSS box to the "Sidebar" box on the upper right hand side of the page. You may need to slowly drag it so that your browser scrolls up to the top right part of your browser window.
  9. Paste your Tumblr RSS feed in the box that says "Enter the RSS feed URL here." Enter a title for your Tumblr feed. Specify how many posts you want to show, if you want to display content, the author or a link.
  10. Go to your blog to view the updated Tumblr RSS feed.

Migrate Tumblr Content to Self-Hosted WordPress

  1. If you just need to start a blog on WordPress, get a custom domain name and move all your Tumblr content in there. You can do so via an Import plugin or an automated converter.
  2. Download WordPress from wordpress.org
  3. Buy a hosting and a domain name
  4. Install your WordPress site
  5. Choose a theme for your new site (they are available at [1] or you can find a lot of other theme resources.
  6. Download and set up the plugin "Automated Tumblr to WordPress Migration". Search for it in WordPress Plugin Directory. This plugin will help you to transfer your site content (pages, posts, images, tags) from Tumblr to WordPress.
  7. Try out demo migration, to check out whether everything looks ok for your site.
  8. Set up 301 redirects from your previous URLs to the new ones so that your followers could find your new blog.
  9. Check everything to see if the site works and looks as it should.
  10. Tweet or post the news to Facebook that your blog has been moved and let everyone know its new web address.

Add Tumblr on Self-Hosted WordPress Blog

  1. Log in to your self-hosted WordPress blog. WordPress is available on the WordPress homepage as a hosted blog, or you can use the WordPress platform on your own website. You can add a specialized Tumblr widget, but only on a self-hosted WordPress site for security reasons. If you are unsure, your blog is most likely hosted by WordPress and this section will not work for you.
  2. Choose a widget that has been made for use with Tumblr on WordPress. You can choose the Tumblr plugin. Choose another plugin called Vuvox Express if you want to create a slide show of your latest posts. This is a great option for a video or photography-heavy Tumblr account.
  3. Search for the Tumblr or Vuvox Express Widget. This is available in the Plugin Directory at WordPress.org. Plugins are programming that extend the abilities of a self-hosted WordPress Blog. They will help you enable new widgets.
  4. Download the latest version of the Tumblr or Vuvox Express Widget. You will see this as a button in the right hand column of the page.
  5. Upload "tumblr-widget.php" to your /wp-content/plugins/ directory on your computer, after the widget has downloaded. This will allow the widget to appear under the Widgets page of your Appearance tab on your WordPress dashboard.
  6. Click and drag the Tumblr Widget box to the "Sidebar" box on the upper right hand side of the page. You may need to drag it slowly so that your browser scrolls up to the top right part of your browser window.
  7. Go to your blog to view the updated Tumblr feed.
