Apply Makeup to Look Like Marie Antoinette

Do you want to go to the costume party as Marie Antoinette this year? Then read on how to get her style in easy steps!

Steps

  1. Apply foundation before commencing with the following steps. The lighter the foundation, the better. Apply a few dots on your face, then blend them with a brush, sponge or fingers. Then, blend it down your neck and hairline to look natural. You don't want to look like you have a mask on!
  2. With a large brush, dust baby powder all over your face, neck, and arms. The aim of doing this is to achieve a pale, almost sickly, powdered 18th century look. In the age of Marie Antoinette, it was fashionable to be extremely pale. A really white powder tone would be suitable for replicating this appearance.
  3. Apply dark brown eyeshadow on your eyebrows. Do this with an angled makeup brush, as it is very precise. Create a high arch with it.If you have straight eyebrows, conceal them first with a concealer; then draw the "fake" eyebrow.
  4. Swipe on taupe or a very light colored eyeshadow. Follow this across your eyes in a crescent shape, placing it above the creases of your eye, to contour your eyes. Don't over-blend it!
  5. Swipe on one coat of black mascara on the upper lashes. Another way to achieve this look in a way that appears much more dramatic, is to use fake lashes. Apply mascara in a zig zag motion, for a flawless look. For fake lashes, put a thin strip of glue, let it about 20 seconds to set. Then apply it on the lash line (you can use tweezers for better precision).
  6. Use a deep plum powder on the apples of your cheeks. This will create contrast with your pale face and it will draw attention to your cheeks. The apples of the cheeks are the part that "pops out" when smiling.
  7. Use a small-sized makeup brush for adding the lipstick. Start at the center of your mouth and blend it out to soften the edges. Make sure that the lipstick is a red shade, as this provides the most stark and effective contrast with the white base. You can experiment with lighter and darker reds and see what works best for you!

Tips

  • In eras past, regal women such as Marie Antoinette often eschewed makeup removal, skin care routines, and showering for long periods of time; instead sleeping in their make-up and caking on layer after layer as necessary. This make-up look was effective at covering the less hygienic results this lack of bathing caused.
  • For your hair: You can either powder your hair (with baby powder), or buy a wig and powder it.
  • For the costume: Search in vintage stores for elegant jewelry, a fringed shawl, and a gown (or you could use an old prom dress; alter its style if needed).

Warnings

  • Take care not to overdo the make-up or it may appear clown-like. If so, tone down the end results with powder and blotting.
