Attend a Meeting

Meetings vary - whether they are with friends or family, job meetings, school meetings, or even club meetings, you'll want to be organised and 'fit in'. Of course - all meetings are different, and consist in different thing, but they all have general rules that need to be followed. Meetings can also vary in importance - and type.

Steps

  1. Find out the details. There is no point in attending a meeting if you have no idea whether or why you are needed, the time it starts and the time it ends. Ask the organizer for any details you are unsure of and make sure you are able to attend.
  2. Arrive on time. It is probably best to arrive a few minutes early so you have time to find the meeting area and organize yourself quickly.
  3. Depending on the type of meeting (especially if it's something professionally-related a business meeting, a volunteer training, a jury duty, etc.), consider taking paper and pen to write notes. The organizer may already provide paper for you, but bring some along anyway.
  4. Any required dress code depends on what sort of meeting it is - if it is relaxed, dress casually, and if it is formal (like business meetings), dress nicely. It is probably best to find out how you are expected to dress so you fit in and don't stand out.
  5. Pay lots of attention and listen carefully. The organizer will probably have lots to say and will be expecting you to take it in. It will be important so make sure you understand what he/she is saying. Ask any questions if you feel inquisitive and don't understand.
  6. If the meeting is a 'talking type meeting' where everybody is expected to take part, make sure you do speak at least a few times. But make sure you are respectful to everybody attending.

Tips

  • Bring a bottle of water along to quench your thirst and wet your throat.
  • Be polite and do not offend anybody.

Warnings

  • Be careful how you phrase what you say.
  • Be ready to consider and accept other people's views. Don't be surprised if they are different from yours, and you do not agree.
