Avoid Getting Caught on Facebook

Have you ever had a Facebook withdrawal while you were at work or school and really wanted to check your Facebook profile? You can follow these simple steps to help you not get caught on Facebook!

Steps

  1. Change your online status settings. Go into the 'Privacy' section of your profile and click on the 'edit settings' link. Now click on the drop-down option next to your online status and change it to 'No one.' This will make sure that people cannot tell when your status changes.
  2. Get the "Fizzboost" application, or something similar. Fizzboost will notify you of new messages, friend requests, Wall comments and various other facebook features without you having to have the webpage openly displayed on your monitor.
  3. Use your extrasensory powers! Listen for doors being opened or the floor creaking as someone may be walking near you that you don't want to see you.
  4. Remain anonymous if needed. If you are trying to access Facebook at work, you don't want your boss getting mad at you! Or, if you are accessing Facebook at school, you don't want teachers getting mad at you! You may wish to use an open proxy or VPN that allows you to search anonymously. You may even be able to override filters this way as well.

Tips

  • You should always clear your cookies and history so that your admin can never catch you by your browsing history.
  • You can read up more on proxy servers on Wikipedia's entry on proxy servers.
  • Most web browsers have a feature that allows you to browse the internet without those pages being stored in your history. Use this to go to Facebook.
    • If you use Google Chrome, click on the spanner button and click on New Incognito Window.
    • In the case of Internet Explorer, use the Inprivate Browsing option available in the Safety menu.
    • In the case of Mozilla Firefox/Cometbird, go to tools menu and click on Start Private Browsing.
    • For Apple Safari, click on the nuts&bolts menu and Start Private Browsing.

Warnings

  • If you have been warned by your boss or a teacher not to use Facebook, you may wish to take their advice! Do you really need to access Facebook right now, or can you make it through the day until you get home or some place that you can access Facebook? This how-to does not guarantee that you will have success!
