Avoid Scary Pop Ups on Flash Animations over the Internet

These steps, tips and warnings will help you decrease the chances of running into a flash animation with a prank flash shock image played for scares.

Steps

  1. First, consider the website you're surfing. If it's one that you've never seen before, don't take the risk.
  2. Look at the title of the animation. If it looks like something boring or interesting, chances are it's a trick to scare you.(Note: some screamers have titles that say how to prevent screamers)
  3. Look for anything that requires you to turn the volume up and/or concentrate hard on an image. It is usually a sign of a scary experience.
  4. Turn off the sound. If it does happen to be a "shock flash" animation, it will scream at you.
  5. If you suspect it could be a trick, let it play but step away from your computer and turn the sound down. Don't concentrate on it too much, it won't shock you this way.
  6. If it's on YouTube, look at the comments and see if anyone complains about the scare in the video. Also, look at the related videos. If it has a video of the car, any scary faces or pop-up video that you have seen, then it is a pop-up video.
  7. Also look at the tags of the video. Some words just might give it away that it is a pop-up.
  8. Sometimes, if it's a video where they have a clock counting to new hour, it's going to be a screamer.
  9. Ask a friend if they have seen it before.
  10. Try to calm yourself before watching the video. The more you anticipate it the more scared you will be.
  11. As the video begins, play a song through your computer speakers. Make sure the song is loud and is not itself scary, or else it will backfire, and you will end up even more scared. Place some breathable, translucent material over your face, like a sheer scarf. The material should really be translucent; too clear, and you might see the video; too opaque, and you won't be able to see if, while the video is playing, someone walks up to you with the obvious intention of giving you a good scare.

Tips

  • If you can, scroll down until there is only a little bit of the screen, enough to see what it was without scaring you.
  • If you see a website that looks suspicious, don't click on it.
  • If it's a video on YouTube, put the video on pause and slide the thing that tells you how much time you have left on the video, through the video. If you see a face or something, chances are it will try to scare you. This way, there isn't any sound and it's not moving.
  • Try turning down your speakers before watching the video, so you won't be scared by a scream. Look at the ratings too, before watching it.
  • Don't think of thoughts that will lead to that thought. It's kind of like reminding yourself of the scary thing.
  • Remind yourself that the thing is not real and can't harm you.
  • Right clicking will let you know if it's an image or a flash by bringing up a different menu (for the "concentrate on the image" ones).
  • If it is a maze that says there is a surprise at the end, it is an obvious prank.
  • Don't go into websites in foreign languages unless you understand that language.
  • Also, on YouTube, check the video's comments before you watch it. Those can usually tell you if it's scary or not. If it also says adding comments has been disabled or something like that, try to expect something to scream at you.
  • Usually friends are the ones who set you up. If it's an email use the steps above, but if they are with you ask them the title of the video or some questions that will try to break them. For example if your friend tells you to check out this cool video and you ask him what the title is he will usually answer by saying you'll see. Then you know you might be getting pranked.
  • If you do run into to any scary faces while surfing the Internet, don't take it seriously.
  • Some people don't get scared. Some people are also naturally resistant to scary things like screamers.
  • If a video starts with something sexual, it's possibly a screamer.

Warnings

  • Please do not show the Scary Pop Ups to children under 10 or the elderly over 55. Also,do not show the video to an adult who has heart problems.
  • Many screamers include Scary Maze (obviously), Scary Car (also obvious) and other K-fee Commercials, Ghost Chair, Amazing Ballerina Dancer (very scary and hard to realize it's coming), Subliminal Messages (most of them), Spot the Difference, and What's Wrong With this Picture? Avoid those videos.
  • Don't tell the website to put a warning on the video because then it wouldn't be any fun to anyone else who saw it who might want to be scared.
  • If you do get scared, please don't send hate mail to the website while cursing them.
