Block a Website in Internet Explorer 7

The Internet is a vast web of inter-connected servers which may host inappropriate content for certain people, especially children. The following instructions are for blocking malicious and unwanted websites in all versions of Internet Explorer. If you are using Firefox or a similar browser, you may want to consider an alternative way to block websites using a host file: Use a Hosts File in Windows. Here is the easiest and most effective method to safely surf the Internet through IE.

Steps

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. In the Menu bar click Tools; Internet Options, Content.
  3. In the Content Advisor box, click Enable.
  4. Click the Approved Sites tab.
  5. Enter the address of the website. Keep in mind - if you want to block the complete website put an asterisk (*) in front. For example to block Myspace completely, type *
  6. Click Never and then OK.
  7. Click on the General tab. Make sure to select Users can see websites that have no ratings
  8. Enter an easy-to-remember password.
  9. Click OK to safely surf the Internet.



Tips

  • Consider installing Web filtering software such as Control software[1], which allows or disallows websites based on their content.
  • Microsoft uses the Family Online Safety Institute [2] for the rating service. You can customize and see if that fits your needs.

Warnings

  • When someone types a specific URL into a search engine (Google, for example), they'll be able to click on the "cached" link and see an earlier version of the site.
