  18. Know your State and Local laws, organizational policies and procedures, this saves a lot of time when you may have to answer to either one.

Tips

  • Go to the gym. If you're a smoker, give it up. Healthy lungs are essential in everything from facilitating an emergency rescue to effecting the arrest of a combative suspect to warding off illness.
  • Be fit. Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Realize your job may involve physical danger to yourself. Be prepared to act accordingly.
  • Be caring. Treat everyone respectfully but firmly.
  • Remember your most important tool is your mouth, not handcuffs, cs, etc. Be polite, even in the face of abusive behavior by others.
  • Realize how much society needs you: without the police, there could be some problems. Remember you are being paid a wage to protect others.

Warnings

  • Never assume because a person is for the moment being cooperative, following commands, answering questions, etc., that the individual cannot cause you harm. Don't relax your guard. Maintain a safety area between yourself and the individual that will allow you to react if attacked.
