Be a Pilot for a Company Like FedEx
Cargo companies, such as FedEx, hire pilots to transport freight around the world. Because pilots have many rules and regulations they are required to follow, however, being a good pilot at a company like FedEx can be done by following a few simple rules that all pilots should follow.
Steps
- Follow all safe flying practices
- Safety is of the utmost importance for any pilot's job and it is important to keep up-to-date on the latest Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) regulations to be sure you are following good pilot safety practices.
- Obtain certification on additional aircraft.
- As companies replace older aircraft, they often purchase newer aircraft that could require additional certifications. Obtaining additional certifications will insure that you will be able to fly newer aircraft when it is placed in service.
- Stay up-to-date on all certifications.
- Some certifications must be renewed periodically, such as the medical examination which must be completed every 6 months. Pilots at companies like FedEx should be reminded that their certifications are due, but it is ultimately the job of the pilot to keep these current.
- Get enough sleep.
- FAA regulations limit pilots to 8 hours flight time in a 24-hour period for domestic flights. On international flights pilots are required to be given a period of rest after a flight of 12 hours or more and require them to have at least 8 hours of sleep in a 24 hours period for domestic flights.
- Continue to practice.
- When obtaining a pilot's license, students get plenty of practice. That should not stop after licensure. Continuing to practice outside of work is the best way to sharpen skills and develop good habits.
Tips
- One way to get extra practice is to take up recreational flying, such as aerobatics or gliding. This will give pilots at a company like FedEx practice and help them obtain new and diverse abilities they may be able to use on the job.
Warnings
- Pilots for a company like FedEx often are assigned mostly night flying when they first start with the company. Because night flying is more difficult, it can be stressful.
- Criminal charges can result in the revocation of your security clearances and could affect your pilot's license.
