Become a Circus Contortionist
When people hear the word "contortion", they think of scary flexible double jointed-folks. And that's what contortionists are, right? Well, no. Contortion can be anyone's ball game, as long as you have the right training (and some guts to spare).

Steps
- Find a gym/studio to learn the skills you'll need. Although studios or gyms focused just on contortion aren't that popular in the U.S., see if you can search your community for a dance studio or gymnasium. Gymnastics and dances are lead-ins into contortion, and some places even offer contortion itself.
- Stretch, stretch, stretch! This may seem like a bit of a no-brainer, but to be in the contortion business, stretching is key. Try to stretch all parts of your body, the main ones being the back, legs, shoulders, etc. 15 minutes a day to stretch is ideal if you have the time. Be consistent with your stretching: It builds muscle memory.
- Be willing to expand your skill. Once you master the basics, you can expand your horizons (with help from a spot, of course) and learn more. Can you do a handstand? Try holding it in a different position. Can you do a backbend? Try a back walkover. Don't be afraid to try new tricks, so long as you are careful with how hard you push yourself.
- Add polish and finesse to your movements. What makes contortionists so fun to watch is how easy they make it look doing near-impossible things with their body. Try to work on facial expression and technique. No audience member will enjoy watching you if you have a grimace on your face the whole performance.
- Finally, try to audition for a contortion event. Okay, so it doesn't have to be Cirque Du Soleil or something colossal like that, but if you share your skill, you might end up there eventually. Try out for something small first, like a talent show or acrobatic team at your local gym. Who knows, you could be the star contortionist of the circus someday!
Tips
- There will always be someone better than you. Have goals to work up to, so you can achieve as much as you can.
- Don't get frustrated if you can't do any tricks. Keep in mind you are just starting out, and you are doing your best.
- Lastly, have fun. Contortion is an art. Remember that.
Warnings
- Make sure to stretch before attempting any tricks.
- Never push yourself too hard, you may end up injuring yourself.
