Become a Theatre Makeup Artist

This article is a step by step guide to being a successful theatre makeup artist.

Steps

  1. Buy a complete makeup kit. Buy a semi-cheap makeup kit that has everything in it. Eye-shadow, foundation, lip glosses, bronzer, blush, brushes, everything. You can also buy it individually.
  2. Buy costume accents like scars and fake blood. Consider starting with scab blood, scar wax, liquid latex and some 2 part silicone (3rd degree). These basics will get you through any look with some hard work and imagination. A translucent setting powder is also crucial to stage makeup. You can get all of these things on amazon.
  3. Watch how other theatre makeup artists do their magic. See if you can shadow their techniques.
  4. Pair up with a writer friend and actor friend, and begin putting on theatrical productions. Middle and high schools put on productions every year, so talk to your theater teacher about doing cosmetics for the show.

Tips

  • Put the makeup on heavy because of the stage lights.
  • Take make-up classes.
