Become a High School Prep

In general, there is a difference between "popular" and "preppy". Yes, popular people have a lot of friends. But most people have many friends, therefore, technically making them popular. Being preppy in high school is a different story.

Steps

  1. Know where you stand now. If you're not even close to being a prep right now (i.e. you're labeled as "emo", "scene", "dork/nerd/geek", or even a total loser with no friends, it will take a while for people to accept you as a prep and not your "old self".
  2. Do not become preppy because you want to be popular, anyone can be popular! A reason you might want to become popular is to look better, have more friends, or even if you don't like your current label. If you're changing schools, becoming preppy overnight is a great idea, sure! But if you're seeing the same kids in high school next year, gradually change. If you're already in high school, it's probably best to wait until college.
  3. HAIR; Get it cut! Ask the hair stylist for a cute cut with not too many layers. Most preps like their hair to their shoulders. If you like longer hair, get it around two inches past, but don't leave your hair extremely long.
  4. Straighten your hair! Use anti-frizz cream, or a shampoo that reduces frizz/static. Then, using a flat iron, straighten your hair, when it is completely dry. It helps to flip your hair upside down & straighten it that way afterwards. Apply a little anti-frizz cream, not TOO much, because then your hair will look oily!
  5. Curly/wavy hair is really great as well, if you want to stay natural and not let your hair fry. Just make sure it is not frizzy.
  6. Now, you can do a lot with your hair! It's better if you leave it down, but if you feel a bit bored, you could also try a low ponytail or a side braid. DO NOT put your hair in pig tails, two braids or super-high ponytails, because they can make you look childish... not so preppy.
  7. Just remember the golden rule of preppy hair: Pretty, Polished, and Clean. Think simplicity.
  8. Start thinking differently. Not everything goes. If you wear dorky things, you won't become a prep. You must start shopping differently.
  9. Go shopping. Preps wear simple clothes, like polo shirts, classic jeans(ripped/styled jeans are a major no-no), classic shoes(boat shoes, flats, flip flops, boots, canvas shoes, etc; just remember, simple, classic, cute) tees, sweatshirts, and tank tops(loose ones; preps don't overly show off cleavage!). For summer, get a cute solid bathing suit from anywhere just make sure it's gonna last for awhile. Plaid shorts(Madras and Seersuckers are good ideas as well) and classic tops. Also, jewelry is elegant- wear pearls(true preps wear heirlooms), charm bracelets, cuffs, silver/gold.
  10. Try out for a High School Sport. This is where you will meet most of your new friends! Be nice to everyone on the team, and invite some to hang out with you. Take them shopping, and have them help you pick out clothes. Or, hold a slumber party for a few of them ( if they're already friends ). Or have them hang at your house. Sports to consider ; lacrosse, field hockey, swim team, soccer,& softball are just a few. Cheerleading is okay but not always preppy, if your cheer squad is known for being promiscuous, which is totally not preppy.
  11. Be nice - to everyone! I know EVERYONE says this, but don't ditch your old friends. Even if you don't like them anymore. They will spread gossip, which will make you even more hated if you aren't already. Gradually stop hanging out with them. Still be nice to them, even if they aren't. Be a very open, friendly person. Preps don't have a limit on being friends with preps only. If someone has nowhere to sit in lunch, invite them to your table. It will not only make you look like a better person, but this person will also be a little happier.
  12. Start wearing mascara and foundation if you haven't already. Don't overdo it on makeup, though. Look natural and clean.
  13. Basically, change your attitude. Be a friendly person, and smile a lot (but not 24/7...weird!). Don't have a fake laugh, or a rude attitude. Don't talk about your new friends behind your back.

Tips

  • Do well in school! Actually TRY to get good grades ( unless you already do ) Ask your friends to help you with the homework, or stay after school for extra help. Preppy people are not labeled nerds, but most of them are very smart, and care about their grades.
  • This is for all you who don't have a lot of money, but still want to buy preppy clothes! First, you'll need to save money. If your old enough, get a job. If not, ask for an allowance if you do not have one already ( or a raise? ) Do more to help around the house, and your parents might give you money.
  • Shop at places like Plato's closet. Yeah, it's used clothing. But you can get Hollister/A&F and vintage jeans for very low prices. You might also find some new styles, & a lot of people take their used Hollister shirts here, and they are fairly new.
  • Also, make an aim account ( http://www.aim.com ) and add everyone. It's a good way to keep in touch with everyone.
  • Make a Myspace, or Facebook, depending on what people in your high school use. Add everyone who's everyone, including your new friends, or people who you've talked to a few times. Put a nice, decent default on it. Don't do stupid poses or post pictures of yourself being inappropriate ( ex. at a party, with a beer in your hand, or very revealing pictures. )

Warnings

  • People will talk about you. Most of them are jealous, just ignore them!
  • You'll be faced with a lot, LOT of strange, new situations. Boys may suddenly start flirting with you. Be prepared to sit with the football players, or other "guy preps", who like to hang out with preppy girls.
  • If your invited to a party, don't be alarmed. Ask one of your friends if you can come to her house before you leave. Don't drink, take photos of yourself drinking, etc. Parties can be fun without drinking/smoking. Don't try to be cool and kiss other girls, have sex, or something like that. Rumors will be all over school the next day - not good ones either.
  • Don't become fake, or full of yourself. Remember, no one likes a bitch!
  • NEVER, EVER send "nude" or "sexy" pictures of yourself to your boyfriend/a guy you're trying to impress. Some preppy guys mean well (but some don't), but many will send these pictures to all their guy friends, who send them to the REST of the school. This will ruin your reputation, and it's also very embarrassing!
  • Gossip is a part of the preppy high school life style. Your the people who start the gossip - but you'll also be gossiped about! So try to gossip as little as possible.
  • Again, if people call you a poser, just ignore. They were once like you were, trust me.
  • Some people may not consider Hollister and Abercrombie "preppy", so stay away from them as much as possible. Go for classic; Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, J. Crew, etc.
  • A lot of "preppy" people are fake. As in, they pretend to be your friend, but secretly hate you/talk behind your back. Avoid these girls, they're trouble.
  • Also, don't have sex until you are ready. The guy most likely WILL brag, and you might not be able to face the consequences..you could get pregnant or get an STD, and a lot of times this happens when one is drunk. So a good way to avoid this, is not drink!
