Change Your Appearance from Emo to Preppy

Emo girls and preppy girls are incredibly different. They have very few similarities-- they look different, act differently, have different values and even think differently. That's why changing from emo to prep can be hard work and difficult. Luckily, though, this is the article that can make the change much easier if you follow these steps!

Steps

  1. Find your reason for doing this. Are you just looking for a fast way to become popular? If so, that's the wrong attitude. You shouldn't force yourself to conform and fit in. Changing one's look is fine, but don't do it for the wrong reasons.
  2. Try to be bright and bubbly. This is most definitely an essential step in becoming a preppy girl. It's difficult to change from emo to bright and bubbly, but if you skip this step, the rest is pointless. If it is hard to be pleasant, than smile and laugh as much as you can. Happy people draw people to them. Surround yourself with positivity!
  3. Be polite. Preps are generally polite people, with basic etiquette. Say "please" and "thank you", open doors for people, let people sit next to you on the bus, and don't be rude or snobby. Don't ever cuss or talk badly about people. If someone gossips about you, let them look bad. People will view you as the classier one.
  4. Be intelligent. Remember, preps are the ones who are in Ivy League schools. To be in one of those, you have to be classy and smart. Start hitting the books and pay attention in class. Ask the teacher what you can do to bring up your grades. Be concerned about your GPA. Make an appointment with your school counselor and tell her/him you need to get good grades. Start planning a bigger future for yourself. Try to take honor and AP classes. If you never thought about going on to college, start considering your options.
  5. Be active! A lot of preps are into golf, polo, volleyball, tennis, skiing, horseback riding, etc., but just because something doesn't necessarily fall into the category of "prep" doesn't mean you shouldn't try it! Get involved in something fun that gets you moving.
  6. Makeover your clothes. This step may be difficult for some, so start off gradual. First, you'll want to get a good idea of what prep is, so try looking at websites, magazines, etc. After you're finished with that, start shopping for the basics and eventually build up to a decent preppy wardrobe. To help get you started, here are some things you'll want to look for:
    • Polo, oxford shirts, Henley, cable-knit sweaters, turtlenecks
    • Girly dresses (possibly some floral), skirts, chinos
    • Boat shoes, oxfords, ballet flats, boots
    • Simple but pretty jewelry, such as pearls
    • Light, clean perfumes. Yes, it is very possible to smell preppy. You have to smell nice; just don't douse yourself in it.
    • A few examples of high-quality preppy brands to look for: Vineyard Vines, Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brothers, L.L. Bean, Tommy Hilfiger, Lilly Pulitzer, J. Crew, etc. However, if you're on a budget, you can either try eBay, or just check out thrift stores, Ross, TJ Maxx, etc. Sometimes, you can score brand names for much cheaper prices. It doesn't even have to be brand name; you can always find something similar to it. The key to being prep is being classic, not all about the brands.
  7. Change your hair. If you have black dyed hair, then let your hair grow out and be natural. For everyday hairstyles, try ponytails, buns, braids, etc., paired with a cute headband, ribbon, or bow.
  8. Always dress up in classic clothes, not down. Whatever the price, whatever the label, wear the clothes you have well. Don't have your pants slipping down to reveal your underwear or an incredibly revealing, low-cut shirt. Make sure your clothes are well-fitted and clean; anything that isn't, shouldn't be worn. If you want to show a little skin, pick one area. Example: If you want to show off your shoulders, wear a strapless dress, but make sure it isn't short! Or if you want to show off your legs, don't wear a low-cut top. Low-key IS key.

Tips

  • If your grades are bad, set goals to move them up a semester at a time. Study instead of watching TV or talking on the phone.
  • Pay attention in class. Preps like to please teachers because they know they want to do well in school.
  • Don't be a poseur. Nobody likes posers, including posers. If you want to become a prep simply to fit in with a friendship group, stay the same. Make sure you actually have a good reason for changing. Maybe you want to do better in school or sports? A true prep is an over-achiever.
  • Choose a long period of time to make this change, like summer holidays. If you start making big changes while you're still at school, it's going to be strange, and some people might think you're a poser.
  • Always stay true to your friends, whoever they are and whatever style they like. Don't stop hanging out with them just because they aren't preps, but be prepared your friends might not accept you. However, your new style will also draw in new friends as well.
  • Argyle, gingham, seersucker, stripes and chevron are just a few examples of preppy prints.

Warnings

  • Don't go too overboard. As the article says, don't change too quickly and if you're changing to prep, make sure you stay prep.
  • Some people may call you a Not Be a Poser. Ignore them--their opinions don't matter. If they ask you why you have changed, tell them you are thinking about getting into a good college now that you are older or that you just wanted a new style. Changing is part of growing up.
