Become a Known Drag Queen in Your Area

Ever wondered how Divine and RuPaul got their start? Ever asked yourself if you have the pizazz and expression to perform as a drag queen? It's not easy, but many, many people will adore you for it!

Steps

  1. As best as you can, try to master the art of female impersonation. Even if you would rather be loud and campy, it is helpful to understand the female form, the beauty of makeup, the essence of matching, and the art of quick thinking (trust me, you will need it).
  2. Decide for yourself--A.S.A.P--whether or not you would like to be a camp queen or a glam queen. Your audience, if at all versed in the world of drag, will judge/appreciate you accordingly.
  3. Put a look together, and make it a good one! Drag Queens are prized for their audacious appearances, whilst others are considered legends for simply being beautiful and exotic 24/7. It is best to check out other drag queens to insure that you will be *unique* instead just run-of-the-mill (it's still one SUPER twisted mill).
  4. Find out if there are any gay bars in your area that host drag shows, and go to a few. If you get the chance, get to know some of the performers; they can clue you in on the other performers, the club, the owner(s), the usual audience, and what the club is looking for.
  5. Start showing up at different venues in drag and take in the reactions you get. Try to get a spot in something small, like a talent show or a parade. Then, get as many bookings as you can and really build an audience for yourself, even if it is small.
  6. Take it anywhere you'd like! People like RuPaul and Divine became famous because of their ability to act and entertain when dressed in drag. If you work hard and fine-tune your act, you could be the world's next biggest drag queen.

Tips

  • Many a drag queen out there are complete and total b****es, so it would be wise to develop a quick tongue. You could also try to set yourself apart by doing the opposite! A sweet, nice, and friendly Queen is always a great addition to the scene. You've got to be STRONG to be a drag queen, honey!
  • Have some integrity! If you show up on time, are an honest person, and act in a professional manner, you'll always get the best bookings!
  • Always always act according to how you look if you look like a lady act like one and remember to tuck.
  • Use a good waterproof mascara.
  • Don't be too, too serious about it. After all, it is DRAG.
  • Don't copy the other drag queens. Just don't.
  • Do something more than plain pantomime or dance, unless what your pantomime/dance is totally avant-garde and eye-catching. Comedy and acting are a good source of appreciation.

Warnings

  • Also be careful not to lose yourself in it. (i.e. if you are sweet as candy now, STAY sweet; if you're a b***h, STAY a b***h, girl!
  • Try to avoid the heavy drug scene. Not only could drug addiction ruin your life and career, but it could also ruin your fan base.
  • Be careful with the prejudice and homophobia out there. Even in "the city" where such things are accepted, you will most likely encounter bigotry everywhere you go.
  • Don't wear heels, no matter how Fierce they are, if you haven't practiced and mastered them first at home! You don't want to be the gorgeous girl marching around like a linebacker!
