Buy a Florida Sunpass
The State of Florida's Department of Transportation has incorporated a system of prepaid tolls on their state roads. Sunpass holders purchase transponders or seal their transponder stickers onto the windshield to identify themselves. Cameras are programmed at the toll booth to read the balance and registration information on the Sunpass. This system allows Sunpass holders to drive past the toll booth on toll roads and bridges in the state. The Department of Transportation estimates that drivers using the Sunpass spend an average of 25 percent less than those who stop at toll plazas to pay in cash. Buy a Florida Sunpass on the Sunpass website, or at any authorized retailer.
Steps
- Determine how you will pay for your Sunpass. The method of payment you use for your Sunpass will determine where you are able to buy it. If you want to buy your Sunpass online, you will have to use a credit or debit card. You can use cash, credit cards, and sometimes personal checks when you buy them at other locations.
- Gather all necessary information. In order to buy a Sunpass, you will need your driver's license number, license plate number, and payment. A regular Sunpass transponder will cost $25.00, and a sticker transponder will cost $4.99.
- Visit the Sunpass website. The Sunpass system has its own website, where customers can buy a Sunpass and add money to their Sunpass accounts. You can also pay any fines you owe the Sunpass system, which may be accrued if you pass through toll plazas in the Sunpass lane when you do not have any money in your account.
- Log on to Sunpass.com. Sign in to your account, or set up a new account if you have not used the system before. Type your personal identification and vehicle information into the fields on the screen, and input your credit card number.
- Select how much money to put into your Sunpass account, and link your account to a credit card or bank account so that you can regularly replenish your account. Ensuring your tolls continue to be prepaid will prevent the Department of Transportation billing you for your travel through toll booths.
- Purchase a Sunpass at a local retailer. Go to any Publix Supermarket or CVS Pharmacy in Florida to buy a Sunpass. You can purchase a Sunpass or replenish your account at a self-serve kiosk, or by paying the cashier in the store directly.
- Buy a Sunpass at a turnpike service plaza or gas station. Service plazas along the turnpikes in Florida are available for travelers to stop for food, gas, and Sunpasses. Look for the self-serve kiosks, or ask an associate at the turnpike gas stations about how to purchase your Sunpass.
- Keep your receipts. You can print receipts when you buy a Sunpass online, and you will be provided with a receipt when you pay at a retailer or turnpike. Keep these receipts in case you receive a bill at a later date. If your transponder or sticker does not read properly, you will want to document the purchase or replenishment of your Sunpass.
Tips
- Keep all of your information current. If you run out of money in your Sunpass, the Department of Transportation will bill you at the address where your vehicle is registered. If you do not have your current contact information on file, you might not be aware of overdue bills.
