Cancel a Delta Flight

Having to change your plans and cancel a flight can be stressful, but there are ways you can minimize your losses. If you're flying on Delta Airlines, you can cancel your flight within 24 hours from when you purchased the ticket for a full refund.[1] If more than 24 hours have passed, you can obtain a new ticket or request a credit towards another flight. If you follow the right steps, you may be able to cancel your Delta flight without losing all the money that you spent on the ticket.

Steps

Canceling Your Flight within 24 Hours of Booking It

  1. Gather your flight details. Collect your flight itinerary, personal information, flight confirmation number, and the details of the credit card that you used to purchase your tickets.[2]
  2. Input your information into https://www.delta.com/mytrips/. Find your trip by inserting your personal, flight, and credit card details into the web form and clicking “Find my trip.” If you typed everything correctly, it should lead you to a page with your flight details and more options.[3]
  3. Click the cancel button. Once you get to the page with your flight details, click the cancel button to cancel your eTicket. The Delta system will automatically apply a full refund to the card that you used to purchase your tickets if you do it in a 24-hour period.[4]
  4. Call Delta and cancel over the phone if you don't want to use the web. Dial 1-800-221-1212 or find the local number you should use by visiting https://www.delta.com/content/www/en_US/support/talk-to-us/reservations-and-refunds/reservations-offices.html. Have your itinerary and details ready and explain your situation to a Delta customer service agent. Tell them that you'd like to cancel your flight and make sure that you can get a full refund for your ticket.[5]
  5. Send Delta an email if you purchased your ticket at a ticket office. If you bought your ticket at the airport or a Delta ticket office, you can request a full refund through an email. Send an e-mail to DomPsgrRefunds.Delta@delta.com with your full receipt number and a short message explaining why you need to cancel your flight.[6]
    • The receipt number should begin with 006.
    • You should receive a confirmation number if your request went through correctly.

Changing Your Flight

  1. Visit the Delta website and click My Trips. Go to https://www.delta.com/. Once you're there, click the link that says “My Trips” on the left-hand side of the screen.[7]
  2. Input your flight details. You'll have to type in your first and last name and flight confirmation number. Once you type them in, click “Find my Trip.” The next page will display the itinerary for your flight.[8]
  3. Change the dates and details of the flight and click search. On this page, you can select the days of your travel and search for a new flight. Enter the new flight that you want to take and click search to find applicable tickets.[9]
  4. Click the new flight that you want. Once you click on the new flight, the website will automatically calculate the new cost for your flight, including the difference between ticket costs and the fees associated with changing your flight.[10]
    • If your flight is within the U.S., the change fee is $200 USD.[11]
    • The change fee outside of the U.S. is between $200 to $500 USD but varies depending on where you're traveling.[12]
  5. Pay for the new flight. Input your credit card details to pay for the new tickets. Keep in mind that any remaining balance will be charged to your card when you do this.[13]
  6. Call Delta if you don't want to use the web. Dial 1-800-221-1212 or find the number in your country by visiting https://www.delta.com/content/www/en_US/support/talk-to-us/reservations-and-refunds/reservations-offices.html. Have your itinerary and details ready and explain that you want to change your flight details. They will talk to you about your options and the costs associated with switching your flight.[14]

Applying for Refund or Credit

  1. Read your ticket to see if it is refundable. If you purchased a refundable ticket, you may have the right to a complete refund. Even if your ticket is non-refundable, you may be eligible to transfer the flight without losing the full value of your ticket. You must do this within 1 year of buying your ticket. If you're unsure of your ticket's refund status, go to https://www.delta.com/refunds/checkRefundsStatusAction.action.[15]
  2. Apply for a refund online if you have access to the web. Go to https://www.delta.com/refunds/refundsHomeAction.action and type in your first name, last name, and ticket number. Once you submit the request, it will take 1-3 days to receive a determination and refund. If you request a refund via check, it will take 1-2 weeks after the determination to receive it.[16]
  3. Request a refund at a ticket office instead of doing it online. If you don't want to request a refund online, you can go to a ticket office and request one there. Go to https://www.delta.com/content/www/en_US/support/talk-to-us/reservations-and-refunds/ticket-office-locations.html to find the address of the nearest ticket location. Once there, explain that you want to cancel your flight and get a refund for your ticket. The ticket agent may explain that you're only eligible for a credit to another flight, not a full refund.[17]
  4. Call 1-800-847-0578 to request a refund over the phone. You can also request a credit or refund over the phone. Have your flight details ready and call the number. Then, talk to an agent and discuss your options for refunding your ticket or getting a credit to another flight.[18]
