Care for Color Treated Hair
Dying your hair red can look great but keeping your hair red can be a pain. Despite the tendency of dyed red hair to fade, there are ways to keep it from fading as quickly.
Steps
- Consider what shade of red you're going for when you dye your hair red. Bright reds are more likely to fade much faster. If you're looking for a longer lasting red choose a more natural color.
- Wash your hair less often. Despite it sounding gross, it's actually better to wash your hair every other day rather than every day. Your heads natural oils help condition your hair, keeping it healthier, while also keeping your red color in longer. When looking to skip a day of washing, wear a shower cap to keep your hair from getting wet while showering.
- Choose the right products. Use shampoos specifically for colored hair, or even better, for red colored hair. These shampoos are less likely to strip your hair of it's color. You can also opt for a sulfate free shampoo, which is much better for your hair, as it won't strip away it's natural oils.
- Use less heat on your hair. Your colored hair is much more susceptible to damage. Damaged hair doesn't look that great and you may not be able to redye it as often.
- Stay out of the sun. The sun does fade red hair, so try to avoid those UV rays!
Washing your Hair
- Before showering, tie your hair up in a loose bun or a ponytail. Consider wearing a shower cap to keep the water away.
- Step in the shower and do everything else you need to. Wash your body, shave, etc, but try not to get your hair wet.
- Turn the water to a cooler setting and take down your hair or remove the shower cap. Wet all your hair.
- Shampoo and condition your hair as normal. Consider using just conditioner if you can, as shampoo strips your hair of your color more than conditioner will.
Tips
- Use dry shampoo to prolong the amount of time between washings.
- Some reds may fade to more of an orange, while others will fade to a pink.
- Use less product on your hair.
- Keep blow drying and straightening at high heats to a minimal.
Warnings
- Dying your hair does cause damage to your hair.
