Catch Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres in Pokémon X and Y
You can catch the legendary birds of Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow, Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres, in Pokémon X and Y. They roam around the Kalos region, but the method of catching them is different than catching roaming Pokémon in previous Pokémon games. Follow a step by step method of catching them.

Steps
- Choose the starter Pokémon that corresponds to the legendary bird that you want. You get Articuno if you choose Chespin, Zapdos if you choose Fennekin, and Moltres if you choose Froakie.
- Beat the Elite 4. The legendary bird that you get roams around Kalos after you beat the Elite 4 and Champion.
- Encounter the legendary bird that you get around 11 times. Each time you encounter it, it will automatically run away without giving you a chance to battle it. The legendary bird will change its area each time you enter a new location. You can check its current location by going to its entry in the Pokédex.
- After encountering it around 11 times, it will settle in the Sea Spirit's Den. Go there; it is located in northern Azure Bay.
- Talk to the legendary bird to go into battle with it.
Tips
- Have Pokémon with moves that inflict status effects such as Sleep and Paralysis. Status effects will make it easier to catch the legendary bird.
- When they are roaming around Kalos, have a Pokémon that has a level between 60 and 69 and Max Repels. Max Repels are used to make sure you don't encounter Pokémon other than the legendary bird.
- Stock up on plenty of Ultra Balls, Dusk Balls, and Timer Balls. Dusk Balls are useful because they are effective on Pokémon in caves, while Timer Balls become useful if the battle is going on for a long time.
- Save before battling. If you accidentally faint the legendary bird or run out of Poké Balls, you can restart the game and try again.
- The legendary birds are level 70, so make sure you have Pokémon that are of at least that level.
- Make sure you have a bunch of ultra balls or at least one master ball.
Warnings
- Don't use moves that inflict Poison or Burn. These status effects do damage every turn, so the legendary bird may faint before you can catch it.
