Catch Mewtwo in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen

Capture Mewtwo is said to be the strongest Pokémon in the game. Because of this, it can also be the hardest Pokémon to find and catch. Here are some simple steps on how to catch Mewtwo and become one step closer to being a Pokémon Master!

Steps

This is not to be confused with Mew.

  1. Beat the Elite Four. You cannot get Mewtwo until you defeat the Elite Four and become the Pokémon champion, you can catch Mewtwo after fulfilling the quest in One Island..
  2. Obtain the National Pokedex from Professor Oak. You will need to have captured sixty Pokémon before he will give it to you.
  3. Fix the Network Machine by finding the Ruby and Sapphire (see below).
    • If you are playing Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, or HeartGold, SoulSilver, then you can go directly to the cave in Cerulean City.

Get the Ruby

  1. Go to Island 1. You will need a Pokémon who knows Surf to do this. Speak to Celio and he will explain that you need to find an item for his machine.
  2. Go to the entrance of Mt. Ember. On the lower right side of the area, you will see some Team Rocket members. You will hear the first password to the Rocket Warehouse. Battle them, and enter the cave.
  3. Proceed all the way down to the bottom level. You do not need to read any of the braille charts. You will need a Pokémon with Strength to get through the cave.
  4. Pick up the Ruby and exit. You can either use an escape rope, use "Dig" or exit the way you came in.

Get the Sapphire

  1. Go to Island 6 and find the Dotted Hole, which can be seen on the Town Map. At the entrance, read the braille sign. It will say "Cut," so you make sure you bring a Pokémon who knows Cut.
    • If you have not yet saved Lorelei from Island 4, a scientist will be blocking the way.
  2. Inside the cave, look at the braille signs. They will tell you which hole to fall down. If it has 2 symbols, it means go up. If it has 5, then it's right. If it has 4, then it is either left or down. If you mess up, you will have to start over again.
  3. On the bottom level, you will see the Sapphire. Don't get too excited; a super nerd will take it first. He will then give you the second password for the Rocket Warehouse.
  4. Go to the Rocket Warehouse, found on Island 5. You will need to defeat all the Team Rocket members to get to the boss.
  5. In the final room, you will find the super nerd who stole the Sapphire. Battle him. When you beat him, you will get the Sapphire.
  6. Travel to Island 1. Give the gems to Celio, the man who operates the machine on the island. He will connect the regions of Kanto and Hoenn by signal and open up the way to Mewtwo.

Finding Mewtwo

  1. Go to Cerulean City. At the top left corner of the town, you will see a cave that is now open. Travel north to Route 24 and use a Pokémon to Surf to the entrance.
  2. Inside the cave, you will need to navigate the maze to the bottom floor. Make sure your Pokémon team is at a high level; there are a lot of strong Pokémon here (levels 46-70).
  3. At the end, you will see Mewtwo. Save your game before battling him, as this is your only chance to catch him and he is very powerful. See the Tips section for some methods of catching Mewtwo. You should bring at least 50 Ultra Balls.

Tips

  • Save prior to the battle and restart until you succeed.
  • Inflict some status effect on Mewtwo. Freeze and sleep work the best, but others like paralysis can work as well.
  • If you want to save your Master Ball, stock up on Ultra Balls (around 70). Timer Balls can also be effective, for their success rate increases the longer the battle goes on. Mewtwo can be caught with these, but it is very difficult.
  • Catching a high-level Ditto in the cave can be effective against Mewtwo, because Ditto copies all his moves.
  • The easiest way to catch Mewtwo is with the Master Ball, which you get from the president of Silph Co. in Saffron City. The Master Ball's success rate is 100 percent regardless of level and health.
  • In FireRed/LeafGreen or newer games, a high-level Pokémon with False Swipe will help your efforts immensely. False Swipe is a weak Normal-type move that will never KO the target. Parasect in particular is great because it gets Spore, which is a 100% accurate as opposed to Sleep Powder. In HG/SS, it's a TM that you can buy from one of the Department Stores, but in FR/LG, you have to breed a male Scyther or a Nincada with a female Paras or Parasect at the Four Island Daycare.
  • Try to fill your whole team up with strong Pokémon, level 65+. Mewtwo will be level 70 when you meet him. Vary the types of Pokémon you bring, but avoid poison and fighting types.
  • Have a Tyranitar at least at level 56+. Mewtwo's special attack move "Psychic" has no effect on Tyranitar. Keep throwing Ultra Balls until you could finally catch him. Do beware that if you take this route, though, that the sandstorm that Tyranitar starts may end up KOing Mewtwo, so try to have a Pokémon with a move that starts another weather effect.
  • One strategy of catching Mewtwo is if you have a Pokémon with the moves 'Sludge Bomb' and 'Sleep Powder'. Start with putting Mewtwo to sleep, then constantly use 'Sludge Bomb' until Mewtwo has very little HP left. Be careful not to poison it by accident. Then start launching Ultra Balls at Mewtwo (if Mewtwo uses Safeguard, switch your Pokémon around until you are able to put him asleep again).
  • Use a Farfetch'd which knows false swipe. Trade a spearow for one-on-one at vermilion.

Warnings

  • Save your game. You can only try to catch Mewtwo once.
  • Some Pokémon in Cerulean Cave (AKA Unknown Dungeon) won't let you escape/run, so be careful!
  • You can get easily disoriented in the Cerulean Cave; consult a map if you need help navigating.
  • Max Repels do work on the Pokémon in the cave. However, if your active Pokémon is a lower level than the wild Pokémon, the Repel won't work. For best effect, put your strongest Pokémon in the active slot.
