Celebrate National Sister's Day

National Sisters’ Day takes place on the first Sunday in August and is a great time to celebrate your relationship with your sister or sisters. While there’s no right way to celebrate the holiday, there are several things that you can do to make the day extra special. If you live with or close to your sister, plan a day filled with fun and memorable activities. If you and your sister live in different cities, give her a call to let her know how happy you are that she’s in your life. No matter if she’s your biological sister, your step-sister, or even a close friend or sorority sister, National Sister’s Day is a great opportunity to make her feel loved and appreciated.

Steps

Celebrating With Your Sister

  1. Mention the holiday to your sister. Bring up the holiday in advance to let your sister or sisters know it’s coming. National Sister’s Day is about mutual appreciation and love, so it’s best if all sisters know it’s coming and can plan for it. It would be terrible if you planned a whole day of fun only to find out that your sister has other plans for that day!
    • You can say something like, “Hey Franny, did you know National Sister’s Day is coming up this Sunday?“
  2. Buy or make a gift. Gift-giving isn’t a necessary part of National Sister’s Day, but it can be a nice gesture to give her something special. If there is something that you know your sister or sisters want, buy it in advance. If you would rather give her something homemade, make her a mix tape or bake her cookies.[1]
    • Sometimes even just giving her a card or writing her a note can be the most meaningful and touching gift.
  3. Decorate the space. If you live with your sister, consider decorating your house or apartment to make the holiday extra special. Buy streamers, confetti, or whatever other decor you want. You can also put pictures of you and your sister along the walls to personalize the decorations.
  4. Wish her happy National Sister’s Day. Whenever you first see your sister on the holiday, wish her happy National Sister’s Day. Give her a hug and tell her how much she means to you.
    • You can say something like, “Happy National Sister’s Day! I’m so glad to have you in my life!”
    • You can also make a post on social media of the both of you to celebrate the holiday.[2]
  5. Send your sister a gift. There’s no right time to give your sister her gift, but it might be good to give it to her in the beginning of the day.[3]
    • If you bought or made a gift, give her the gift and say something like, “I remember you said how much you wanted this”, or “This made me think of you.”
    • You could also just do something nice for her. Make her breakfast or do her chores to show how much you care.
  6. Coordinate with your sister. National Sister’s Day is a perfect time to be a little goofy with your sister. Wear matching outfits, or purchase silly hats for the both of you to wear when you go out in public. This is a great way to have a memorable Sister’s Day and to show off your unique relationship with your sister.[4]
  7. Do a special activity. If you and your sister have already decided on an activity, go out and enjoy yourself. If you haven’t decided on an activity, brainstorm ways you can make the day special. You do a wide range of activities including going out to eat, going to a movie, taking a hike together, planning a picnic or going to the beach.[5]
    • Think whether your sister has mentioned anything she’s interested in doing or seeing around your city, and come up with a plan based on these ideas.
    • Make sure that you are doing something that you will both enjoy, and remember to compromise if you can’t seem to agree on an activity.
  8. Be nostalgic. National Sister’s Day is a great time to remember the past that you’ve shared together. Talk about your favorite childhood memories with your sister or sisters. You can even whip out a photo album or old family videos for a fun and meaningful trip down memory lane.[3]
    • If you are celebrating National Sister’s Day with friends or sisters who are new to your life, talk about recent memories that you treasure.
  9. Keep things positive. It can be hard sometimes for sisters to get along. You may feel like you’re always squabbling about one thing or another. On National Sister’s Day, try to leave your disagreements behind. Remember that this is a special day, and try to celebrate your sisterhood and your unique relationship without bringing up past arguments.[6]

Celebrating Long- Distance With Your Sister

  1. Plan a call on National Sister’s Day. If you and your sister or sisters don’t live in the same city, National Sister’s Day is even more important! Talk to your sister before the holiday to make sure she knows that it’s coming, Try to set up a call or a video chat for the day.[5]
    • Wish your sister Happy National Sister’s Day after you say hello. This will show your sister that it’s not just a regular phone call: you’re calling so that you both can celebrate your relationship together.
    • Tell your sister that you love her and miss her. Try to keep the conversation positive and happy, but also honest. You do want to tell your sister what has been going on in your life, but don’t talk about sad subjects if they aren’t necessary.
    • If you have more than one sister, figure out how to arrange a conference call or a group video chat.
  2. Give your sister a gift. Since you and your sister can’t share the day together, buying or making a gift is a great way to bridge the gap between the two of you. Try to think of something that your sister would like to receive. Keep in mind that a smaller gift is easier to send through the mail.[3]
    • Make sure to send your gift so it will arrive on or before the holiday. If you are worried that your sister will open the gift before the holiday, write a note on the front of the package that reminds her not to open it until National Sister’s Day.
    • If you don’t want to send a gift through mail, you can also try to send something to your sister through the Internet. You can send your sister a gift certificate, share music tracks with her that she would like, or even write her a thoughtful email to send the day of.
  3. Make a post on social media. If you and your sister are both active on social media, make a post to celebrate National Sister’s Day. Your post could include a picture of the two of you and a few sentences about your special relationship.[7]
    • For instance, under your picture you could write something like, “Sophia, I’m so glad to have you in my life. Hope you’re having a great time in New York and Happy National Sister’s Day!”
  4. Plan a surprise with your sister’s friends. Enlist your sister’s friends to help you make the holiday extra special for her. You can ask her friends to decorate her room with National Sister’s Day decorations, or even plan something more creative like a scavenger hunt that leads to your present!
    • Don’t wait until the last minute to ask her friends for help, and make sure that they’ll keep your plan a secret!

Tips

  • Try not to argue or bicker with you sister, even just for a day!
  • If you are celebrating the holiday with a step-sister, half-sister or adopted sister, let your sister know that no matter what the blood relation is, she’s your family and an important part of your life.
