Change Address for Texas Car Registration

Texas residents can change the address for the location where their vehicle registration renewal notice is mailed by going to the Texas Motor Vehicle website, visiting a Texas tax office (or contracting vendor) in person, or by mailing a change of address form to the Texas motor vehicle department. Forgetting to provide a current mailing address is not a valid reason for failure to pay your renewal fee; non-payment for any reason can result in a fine.

Steps

Go Online to Submit Your Change of Address Form

  1. Quickly change your address online by visiting the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles website. Address changes become effective within 2 business days for changes made through this website.
  2. Look for the "What You Need" menu on the website homepage and click on the Change of Address option.
  3. Review the Procedures options presented and click "Continue." Enter your Texas license plate number and the last 4 numbers of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for your registered vehicle.
  4. Confirm that the vehicle information displayed is the vehicle that belongs to you by clicking "Yes." If it is incorrect, resubmit your information by clicking your browser's Back button and entering the correct address.
  5. Enter your new street number, name, city and ZIP code. Choose your county, then click "Submit" when finished.
  6. Examine the revised information on your screen to ensure that what you provided is correct. Print a copy of this address for your records.
  7. Continue changing your mailing address for other vehicles you have registered in Texas or return to the main menu if you are finished.
