Change Authorized Computers in iTunes

It used to be that you were only allowed to have 1 authorized computer for your iPod or other Apple device for iTunes use. Now you are allowed to have your account accessed on up to 5 different computers at a time. If you're interested in adding an authorized computer or electronic device in order to access your iTunes account, you should learn how to change authorized computers in iTunes. This way you will be able to bring your music everywhere you go and access your account information on authorized computer or device.

Steps

  1. De-authorize 1 of your devices so that you can authorize a new computer or device for your iTunes account. If you don't have 5 authorized computers, you can skip this step.
    • Open iTunes on the device you'd like to remove iTunes from.
    • Select "Store," and then select "De-authorize Computer." Earlier iTunes versions may require that you access this option through the "Advanced" menu.
    • Select the option to de-authorize the computer on your iTunes account, and then enter your password.
  2. Download the iTunes software to your new device or computer. You will need this software on your new device to access your iTunes media.
    • Visit the iTunes website, and select the option to download the software from the computer or device you want iTunes authorized.
    • Follow the instructions to complete the installation on your computer or device.
  3. Authorize the new device or computer using your Apple account.
    • Sign in to iTunes with your current Apple ID and password. Open iTunes, and click on "Login" or wait for the prompt. Some people may have their iTunes account set up to remember their username and password. If you do, you can skip this step.
    • Select a video, song, or other media in your library that you have previously purchased, and then click on the play button.
    • If the computer has not been previously authorized, iTunes will prompt you to enter your Apple ID and password. You will then have your new computer or device authorized, and you can use it as you would on any other device.

Tips

  • If you want to de-authorize all computers that are associated with your iTunes account, you can sign into your account, enter your Apple ID and password, and select the option to de-authorize all computers and devices. You can only do this once per year.
  • Your own audio files, including CDs and songs that have been encoded in Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) or are from another source other than iTunes, do not need to be authorized. AAC is a higher-quality file than MP3, but it works the same as an MP3.
  • If you are selling your computer or device, make sure that you de-authorize iTunes. This will help you to authorize iTunes on a new computer and keep your account protected.
