Change Your Name in Skype

All Skype members have two names associated with their account: a display name, which is usually just your real name, and a username, which can be anything you like. Over time, you may decide that you want to change either of these names, either because your name has changed, or you are tired of the old one. Luckily, it is very easy to change your display name. Changing your username, however, will require creating a new account. Both methods are outlined below.

Steps

Changing Your Display Name

  1. Log Into Skype. Do this using your current username and password. If you have previously chosen the "Sign me in when Skype starts" option, you will be signed in automatically.
  2. Go to your profile. You can do this in one of two ways. You can either click on the Skype tab in the top left hand corner of the page, then choose Profile, then Edit Your Profile. Or you can simply click on your current display name (also in the top left hand corner) which will bring you directly to your profile page.
  3. Click on your current display name. This is beside your profile picture, on the right side of the window. Once you click on it, an edit box will appear.
  4. Type in your new name. Write whatever you want your new display name to be into the edit box.
  5. Click on the small check mark. This is located on the right hand side of the edit box. Alternatively, you can just press enter. Your name change is now complete.[1]

Changing Your Username

  1. Understand that you can't change your existing username. Currently, Skype does not allow members to change their existing usernames. Therefore, if you want to change your username, you will need to create a new Skype account.
    • Be aware that if you create a new Skype account, you will need to add all of your contacts again, and any Skype credit you have on your existing account cannot be transferred over to a new account.
    • Therefore, you should try to use all of your credit and make a note of your friends' usernames on your existing account before creating a new one. [1]
  2. Change your display name. Before you create a new Skype account, you will need to change the display name on your existing account. This is because Skype won't allow you to have two accounts with the same display name. Go to your profile and click on your current display name.
    • An edit box will appear and you can change the display name to whatever you like. When you're done, click on the check mark or just press enter.
    • Make sure that you choose a display name that you don't want to use, as you will be using your preferred display name (usually just your full name) on your new profile.
  3. Sign out of Skype. Once you have changed your display name, you can sign out of Skype. Do this by clicking on the Skype tab at the top left hand corner, then scroll down to Sign Out.
  4. Create a new account. Once you have logged out of your existing account, you can create a new one by choosing the Don't have a Skype name? option. If you like, you can delete the previous account.
  5. Choose your new username and display name. You will now be able to create a new account, using your full, real name as your display name and whatever you choose to use as your new username. You will also need to provide your email ID and agree to Skype's terms and conditions.
    • Once you have created your new Skype account, you can start to add your contacts. You can do this by searching the Skype directory, or by syncing your Skype with your email and Facebook accounts.
    • When choosing your new username, make sure to pick something unique and easily recognizable so your friends will be able to recognize you easily in their contact lists.

Tips

  • It is also possible to change how your contacts' names appear on your list. You can do this by right clicking on a name and choosing the Rename option. The new name you choose will be visible in your Skype but not in theirs. They can also do the same for you.[1]
