Change a Flat Tire on a 1993 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

When the unexpected happens and you get a flat tire on your 1993-1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee, you'll want to know how to remove the flat tire and install the spare tire.

Steps

  1. Pull over to a safe spot on the side of the road, into a parking lot, or other safe place, and engage your Jeep's parking brake and put the transmission in 'Park' (Automatic) or 'Neutral' (Manual). Have all passengers get out of the vehicle.
  2. The tire jack kit is located under the right side of the rear seat. Pull up the rear right seat's bottom cushion, and remove the tire jack kit.
  3. Place a chock under the wheel on the opposite and inverse side of the tire that is flat on your Jeep (i.e., if your rear right tire is flat, place a chock under the front left tire).
  4. Place the jack under the flat tire and jack the Jeep up by turning the crank.
  5. In the rear cargo area, remove the spare tire and wheel. Unzip and remove the spare tire and wheel cover, if necessary.
  6. Using the lug nut wrench, remove the five (5) lug nuts holding the flat tire in place.
  7. Remove the flat tire and place it in the rear cargo area.
  8. Place the spare tire and wheel onto the axle, and secure it with the five (5) lug nuts you just removed from the flat tire.
  9. Ensure the spare tire and wheel is level and balanced, and lower the Jeep back onto the ground.
  10. Once the Jeep is securely lowered onto the ground, ensure all lug nuts are fully secure, and remove the tire jack. Place the tire jack back under the right side of the rear seat, and lower the rear right seat cushion.
  11. If your Jeep has a full-size (matching tire and wheel) spare tire and wheel, you can continue to drive on it. If your Jeep has a temporary (non-matching, smaller tire and steel wheel), you can only drive on it until your regular tire is replaced. However, even if you have a full-size spare tire and wheel, it is still recommended that you get a new tire to replace the flat tire.
