If your check engine light is on and the mechanic or auto-parts store diagnoses your problem as the EGR valve for your 98' Trooper, this article will help you to replace the part yourself. This part costs between $100 to $150 and is simple to replace.

Steps

  1. Verify that the EGR valve needs to be replaced, and purchase the part.
  2. Park vehicle on a flat surface and open the hood.
  3. Allow the engine to cool.
  4. Remove the negative (-) battery terminal.
  5. Remove the plastic engine cover.
  6. Disconnect the wire connection from the EGR.
  7. Spray some WD-40 around the base of the EGR valve and over the bolts to help loosen them.
  8. Using a 12mm socket with extension ratchet, remove both bolts.
  9. Remove the old EGR valve and gasket from its base.
  10. Clean the EGR valve mounting base (the two in/out holes on the engine) with carb cleaner, as there will be burned residue and buildup.
  11. Make sure the base is clean and smooth before installing the new EGR valve.
  12. Spray a bit of carb cleaner into the new EGR valve to prime it.
  13. Set the new gasket over the base and place new EGR valve over it.
  14. Align it with the bolt holes.
  15. Insert bolts and tighten with ratchet.
  16. Reconnect wiring to the new EGR valve.
  17. Reconnect negative (-) terminal to battery.
  18. Note: Radio presets are lost when you disconnect the battery! To make reprogramming easy, write down all your programmed radio station button settings before disconnecting the battery.
