Change the Name of Your MacBook

You just got one of those slick, new MacBooks, and want to name it—but you're just not sure how! Or perhaps your new, but slightly used MacBook is a hand-me-down from your big sister, or bought from a friend, or from somewhere off the internet. However you got it, or whatever it's named, it's not your name. It's time for that Mac to have whatever name you choose, and we'll show you how to do it!

Steps

Change the Name of your Mac

  1. Open up System Preferences. From the Apple menu, scroll to System Preferences and click.
  2. Click the Sharing folder. Go to the third row down entitled "Internet & Wireless". To the right of the Bluetooth icon you should see a little blue folder with a yellow sign on it with the word "Sharing" under it. Click that.
  3. Find the current name. At the top of the window that popped up, you will see Computer Name: followed by an entry field with the current name.
  4. Change the name. You can change that to whatever you desire by deleting that name, and naming it however you wish.

Showing Your MacBook on the Finder Sidebar

  1. Open up the Finder Preferences. From the Finder menu, select Finder Preferences...
  2. Enable your MacBook. In the Finder Preferences window, press Sidebar at the top. Under Devices, locate your MacBook icon (it's the one with the name you just set). Click the checkbox next to it, and check any other devices or servers you want to appear in the sidebar, and then close the window. Your MacBook should now appear in the Finder's sidebar.

Tips

  • This method works for all Macintosh products.
  • A standard name may look like "Steve Jobs' MacBook." Just personalize this with your own name.

Warnings

  • Don't use apostrophe (') as in many cases question mark (?) is displayed.
  • Don't set a name you'll regret later on, just in case you forget this process.

Things You'll Need
