Change the Spark Plugs on a 1998 Isuzu Trooper

Looking to tune up your 98' or newer Isuzu Trooper? This article will guide you in replacing the old spark plugs for new ones.

Steps

  1. Purchase appropriate spark plugs for your year model Trooper. For the 98' Trooper the spark plug gap is 1.0 mm–1.1 mm(0.0394 in – 0.0433 in).
  2. Purchase anti-seize compound
  3. Park vehicle on flat surface and open hood.
  4. Allow engine to cool before commencing work
  5. Disconnect (-)negative battery terminal
  6. Remove plastic engine cover
  7. Spray small amount of WD-40 at each pair of screws that hold the six ignition coils/caps in place.
  8. Remove all ignition coil cap screws with 8mm socket, store in a safe place.
  9. Starting with the furthest ignition coil near the master brake cylinder, gently remove ignition coil tubing to expose spark plug. Try starting with this spark plug as it is the most difficult to reach and if you can't get this one out, you may as well not continue.
  10. Carefully slide the 5/8 spark plug socket into spark plug chamber. Spark plug socket must be connected to a universal joint and ratchet, for you to succeed in removing it.
  11. Once you catch spark plug turn ratchet counter-clock-wise to release it. Bring it out slowly and discard.
  12. Apply anti-seize compound to thread of new spark plug and wipe access with towel.
  13. Inset new spark plug into socket and send down chamber. Turn clock-wise to tighten spark plug. Be careful not to over tighten!
  14. Reinsert ignition coil tubing/cap into chamber.
  15. Reinstall pair of screws and tighten firmly.
  16. Repeat this process for remaining spark plugs.
  17. Reconnect (-)negative battery terminal.
  18. Start engine to verify motor is running smoothly with newly installed spark plugs.

Tips

  • Clean ignition coil tubing with cloth before reinserting into hole.
  • Apply anti-seize compound to spark plug threads to allow for easier removal in the future.
  • Purchase a 3/8" universal joint if you do not already own one, this will make it much easier to gain access to rear spark plugs.

Warnings

  • Allow engine to cool before commencing any work!
  • You must have a universal joint to get to spark plug near the master brake cylinder.
