Clean Kitchen Cabinets

Take the time to clean kitchen cabinets at least once a month. You'll keep your kitchen looking fresh and bright, and you'll protect your cabinet surfaces from grease and dust.

Steps

Clean Kitchen Cabinets That are Stained

  1. Open the cabinet doors. Empty out the contents and set them aside.
  2. Mix some mild soap and water together in a small bucket. Wash the insides of the cabinet using the soap solution and a sponge, and dry off the soap and water with a towel.
  3. Close the cabinet doors. Place some oil soap in a container and dilute it with warm water. Then, test the oil soap on an inconspicuous part of the cabinet's surface to make sure that it does not harm the finish.
  4. Dip a sponge into the oil soap. The sponge should have both a soft side and a scouring side for best results.
  5. Wipe the surface of the cabinets with the sponge. If you have a layer of grease or other material that is stuck to the surface, then scrub the material with the scouring side of your sponge.
  6. Rinse your sponge frequently so that you don't reapply dirt that you've already removed.
  7. Dry the cabinets with a clean, lint-free cloth after cleaning them. Doing this will remove any moisture or residue.
  8. Reapply wax finish if desired. Oil soap will eliminate your wax finish, so you should apply furniture wax or furniture polish to restore the cabinets' shine.
  9. Return the contents of your cabinets to their original location.

Tips

  • Don't forget to clean your cabinet hardware. Dip a toothbrush into a bucket of soapy water and scrub the handles and hinges with the toothbrush.
  • While your cabinets are empty, replace any ripped contact paper, cork or other cabinet liner.
  • For a weekly cleaning, simply use a wet rag to wipe down your cabinets. Then, dry them off with a towel.
  • Wear rubber gloves when you clean your cabinets to protect the skin on your hands.

Warnings

  • Steer clear of silicon-based waxes and polishes. The buildup of wax is hard to remove from the cabinets and attracts dust.
