Clean Your Room in 10 Minutes

Many people have difficulty cleaning their room. To get the job done quickly, follow the steps below. It's quick, easy, and a little fun. So let's get to it!

Steps

  1. Start in one corner of the room, and move in a circle around the room. As you walk around, pick up any items on the floor, on the backs of chairs, and anything out of place (including little knick-knacks).
  2. Put things away as you move around the room.
    • If something belongs in the room you are in, put it in its proper place.
  3. Create separate piles for items that belong in different rooms.
    • Put anything that belongs in the same room in one pile.
  4. Once you have picked up and put away everything in the room you are in, pick up each little pile you've created and take it to its proper room.
    • There is no point making a pile unless you have to walk to a different room. It's a huge waste of time to pick up one item, take it to another room, then go back and continue cleaning. Take everything that belongs in another room at the same time.
  5. Get into a routine. As you walk around the room, pick up items as you go along, then dust, vacuum, and organize.
  6. Dust the furniture. Start with anything that is dark wood, as dust shows more clearly on dark surfaces. Don’t use a dry rag; instead, buy wood cleaners or simply use a wet rag in warm water and a mild soap. Cleaning this way will prevent dust from flying around the room as you clean. In the doorway of the room, spritz a bit of nice-smelling perfume and waft it around with your hand so when people walk in they smell something nice.
  7. Vacuum after you dust. If you vacuum before you dust, the dust will settle and you'll have to vacuum again. Nothing gives a better impression of a clean room than freshly-vacuumed rugs. Buy a perfumed vacuum powder to improve the overall smell of the room as you clean. This will save you time in the long run. Don’t bother vacuuming curtains or upholstery. It takes too much time and pulls you away from other, more important tasks.
    • To kill odors on carpets and upholstery, spray them lightly with a solution of 1 part white vinegar:5 parts water solution.
  8. Buy or Make Disposable Household Cleaning Wipes that can be sprayed on and require no scrubbing. This way, you can spray them on and move on to clean somewhere else while you wait for the chemicals to work on a particular surface. Come back later and simply mop the dirt up.
  9. If you want to, spray some air freshener around the room.

Ways to make cleaning more fun

  1. Clean to music. Play your favorite music as you are working; that way time will go by much faster.
    • Time your movements to the beat of the music (for example, pick up one thing with each beat).
  2. Play the "vacuum cleaner" game. In this game, you are a "vacuum cleaner." Stand in a corner of the room and mentally divide the room into squares. Pick up everything that's in one square and put them away so that the square is spic-and-span. Then move on to the next square and do the same. It's quite fun because you can see your progress as you go along.
  3. "Clean by color" game. Choose a color, for example, blue. Now pick up all the blue items and put them away. Then move onto green, pink, red, orange, etc.
    • You can play the same game using item categories (e.g. clothes, toys, DVDs, electronics, etc.) instead of colors.
  4. Turn cleaning into a competition with a friend or sibling. You will need a timer, a pencil, and a piece of paper. Set the timer for two minutes. Pick up (and put away) as many things as you can, while the other person tallies them. When time is up, switch. Then compare how much you two did.

Tips

  • Listen to music and concentrate on the goal.
  • Fix your bed in the morning, so you'll have one less thing to do later.
  • Keep on top of the mess. It will make a bigger job for you if you don't tidy up often.
  • Make a cleaning bin filled with things like dusting spray, disinfectant wipes, window and mirror cleaner, and finally paper towels that way when you clean your room you have cleaning supplies that are easy to get to.
  • Put used dryer sheets in dresser drawers to keep that fresh washed smell. You can hang them in closets, too. You could also put little lavender bags in the drawers as you sort through them. Not only will this keep your room smelling nice, but your clothes will smell better too!
  • If you want a nice strong springtime smell in your room, you can spray air freshener on all flat surfaces, then close the windows and doors. The freshener will evaporate in your room.
  • Don't get into the habit of shoving everything into a closet, under a bed, or into a drawer. It might be an easy way to make your room look tidier, but later when you can't find something you need, you'll regret it. Organizer boxes that slide under the bed are cheap and easy, because you don't have to do a lot of lifting to get to them.
  • To clean under the bed: just move the bed, and sweep everything out from under it, and then put them into a Keep pile or a Throw Away pile. For example, get all of your toys out, and then sweep or vacuum up all the trash.
  • Mice and cockroaches may come into tidy rooms but they don't come to clean rooms. Remember there is a difference between tidy and clean.
  • Before you start, change out of pajamas into clean clothes, and brush your hair and teeth. This will make you feel more awake and not get tired easily.
  • You should keep any distractions out of the room so you can meet your goal.
  • If you have friends over ask them to help. It will get the job done quicker.

Warnings

  • When you vacuum, make sure that there isn't anything in its way. Don't run over wires or cables. It will damage the wires and will yank items off tables.
  • Don't try to move things that are too heavy for you. Ask someone else to help you or don't do it at all.
  • Don't put heavy objects above chest height. Reaching and lifting results in numerous serious injuries.
  • Help small kids put things away in high places.
  • Make sure that children don't get anything in their eyes if you use a room freshener spray!
  • When bending over, don't use your back to lift objects. Use the strength of your legs to lift instead.
  • Don't let children handle cleaning and dusting products. You spray, then let them dust.
