Steps
- Choose the photograph(s) which you want to create your layout around.
- Purchase acid and lignin free papers which are either a contrast or complement to the colours/themes in the photographs you have chosen.
- Make a mat/border for your photograph to separate the photo from the background. The border can be even all the way around the photograph or thinner/thicker on two sides.
- Adhere your matted photographs to the background paper using acid/lignin free adhesives such as photo tabs or glues.
- Decorate your layout using embellishments such as stickers, die cuts, eyelets, brads, fibres, ribbons, foam, felt, glitters, etc.
- Make a special mat on which to write your journaling - your reflections and recollections about a special person, place, thing or memory.
- Use the computer, sticker alphabets, templates or your own handwriting to create titles which will draw the viewer's eye into the layout.
Tips
- Keep creating - if you like it, it's perfect!
- Get copies of your favorite photos before you start in case you mess up.
- Try using patterned papers for your mat around the photo
- When creating a scrapbook page you want to make sure that your paper is not only complementing your pictures but the papers you're matting the pictures too, the cover, and the following pages.
Also you don't want a "busy" page with a "busy" background for ex: avoid using a paper with bumble bees and then matting a paper background of giant hearts and flowers with a picture of a family running around playing soccer together for that's way to busy. You need a focal point something to focus on so try to bring everything together when putting your scrapbook page together! And remember have fun, keep it simple in the beginning (especially when it's your first scrapbook ever!!)
- Try using Kodak backed photo paper. It keeps from fading better than any other backing.
- Using acid/lignin free paper will ensure your pages do not yellow or deteriorate over time.
- Purchase an acid/lignin free album to put your layouts in.
Warnings
- Don't ever glue your pictures onto a paper in your scrapbook it ruins your pictures.
- If you are not sure if the paper or embellishments are acid/lignin free, do not adhere them to the photograph - place them elsewhere on the layout.
- Make sure to always plan out what your going to do on the page before you glue/tape.Once it's there's no turning back!
