Connect a Wireless Xbox 360 Controller

Your Xbox 360 wireless controller will allow you to play your games from anywhere in the living room, but you have to set it up first. You can even connect it to your PC to play games on your computer. Follow this guide to learn how.

Steps

Connecting to an Xbox 360

  1. Turn on console and controller. To turn on the controller, press and hold the Guide button. The Guide button is in the center of the controller and has an Xbox logo.
  2. Press connection button on console. On the original Xbox 360, this is located next to the memory card slot. On the 360 S, it is located next to the USB ports. On the 360 E, it is located next to the front panel.
  3. Press connection button on wireless controller. This is located at the top of the pad, next to the connection port. You will have 20 seconds after pressing the button on the console to press the button on the controller.[1]
  4. Wait until both lights on your controller and console blink in sync. This indicated that the controller has been successfully connected to the Xbox 360 console. You are now ready to use the controller with the console.

Connecting to a PC

  1. Purchase an Xbox 360 USB Wireless Receiver. In order to connect your wireless controller to your computer, you will need to install a receiver. There are third-party options available, but the Microsoft branded one seems to work the best for most people.
  2. Plug in the wireless receiver. The drivers should install automatically in Windows 7 and 8, but if they don’t you can install them from the included CD. Microsoft-brand receivers should install automatically, but if you are using a third-party receiver, follow these steps:
    • Download the latest Xbox 360 Controller drivers from the Microsoft website.
    • Install the driver after downloading it.
    • Open the Device Manager on your computer. You can access the device manager from the Control Panel, or by pressing the Windows key + X in Windows 8.
    • Look for the Unknown Device in the “Other Devices” section. Right-click on it.
    • Click the Update Driver Software option in the right-click menu.
    • Select “Browse my computer for driver software”.
    • Click “Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer”.
    • Scroll down and select “Xbox 360 Peripherals” from the list of hardware types.
    • Choose the newest version of “Xbox 360 Controller for Windows”.[2]
  3. Press the Connect button on the receiver, and then the Connect button on the top of the 360 wireless controller. This will pair the controller with the receiver.
  4. Press and hold the Guide button on the 360 wireless controller. This is the button in the middle with the Xbox logo. When you have successfully connected the controller, you will see a green light on the controller and the receiver.
  5. Configure the controller. Whether or not you can use your controller depends on the game that you are playing. Each game will have different configuration options available, and you may need to use a program such as Xpadder to assign the correct buttons.
