Convince Your Parents to Let You Have a Cell Phone

As well may well know, cellular technology has evolved tremendously over the past decade or so. Having a smartphone or cellphone has become a basic necessity in our daily lives. How would you call your parents to come pick you up after an arduous day in school? How would you order pizza? How would you call up that really cute girl you've been crushing on? The point is, cell phones are pretty much everywhere in today's society. Here's some advice from the Life Lessons Guru on how to convince your parents to give you a cell phone!

Steps

  1. Talk to your parents! See what they say. One thing's for certain: a cell phone can be costly, especially a top-of-the-line smartphone. It may be a little frustrating if your parents say 'no', but in time you'll soon be able to receive the cellphone of your dreams. Be patient!
  2. Write all the next steps out before presenting the proposition again to your parents.
  3. Be mindful of your parents' budget. You can't expect them to pool money for something like a Samsung Galaxy S7 or an iPhone 6s Plus. Not everyone is able to afford these kinds of phones. Talk it over with your parents about service providers, and what the most suitable cellular service plan fits into your budget.
  4. List the pros and cons of having a cell. Don't be biased. Try to put as many cons as the pros to show consideration of the proposition. The likelihood of you receiving a phone you actually want will increase exponentially. ;)
    • Tell your parents that it would be smart to have a cell phone for emergencies, staying in touch with friends and learning how to responsibly take care of an electronic device. Your parents will presume your demonstrating signs of maturity.
  5. Tell them you need one when you go on vacation with a friend or for after school if you have a hectic schedule.
  6. Become as responsible as you can be. Help out around the house, behave at home and at school, and try to get along with your siblings. If you're old enough, get a job. Do everything you can to show you are ready to have a cell.
  7. Offer to help pay for it yourself, perhaps out of your allowance, or if you have a job, consider paying partially or fully for the cell.
  8. Find different sources. Go to different family members like aunts, cousins and grandparents to get ideas on what they think.
  9. Ask them kindly with the pros and cons, and see what they say!

Tips

  • Remember, aim for need, not want. Give them reasons why you need a cell phone. Do you have soccer practice after school? Do you go to some public place every Saturday?
  • Ask them to at least give you a chance and if they don't think you're responsible enough, then they can take it away. (It works, but don't fight it if they take it away. If you don't fight, they will give it back sooner.)
  • Try not to do the 'please please', I really need it'. That will just make your parents even harder to persuade.
  • Show them you really care and want it.
  • Don't say, "But all my friends have a phone!" Your parents will just say, "Good. You can use theirs instead."
  • Don't text too much on your phone if you know your parents will confront you with the bill showing you have used up a lot of time on your phone texting.
  • Don't mention it right out. That will make them even madder and harder to persuade.
  • Don't get mad if they say no. Don't whine if they say no. Don't scream if they say yes. Act mature.
  • You also might throw the idea of the prepaid cell phone so that they will have a fixed cost to consider.
  • Don't aim to the best. You most-likely won't be able to get the top phone on the market, because it is simply too expensive.
  • Ask if you can carry around a fake cell phone for a week/month to prove that you are responsible enough for a real one. Just don't lose it!
  • Make a deal with your parents: Say "Mom, can I use your cell phone for 1 whole month and see if I'm responsible enough?" and if you are they might consider letting you have a phone.
  • Try to avoid huge carriers like Verizon because the plans get really expensive.
  • Ask for a device and plan that YOU can use!! Don't need 2000 minutes of calling? Don't get it. Don't need an iPhone 6? Don't get it. You can save money that way.
  • Ask your parents why. This may help you find a solution easier.
  • Maybe you can do some research and put together a simple presentation, showing your parents that you really care. If you do, make sure to include reasons why, what phone and plan you want, and backup ideas in case they say no.
  • Drop little hints on how your friends use it in emergencies and try not to bug them everyday
  • Don't ask for a brand new model of phone! This will make your parents much more likely to say no. If you want a cell phone at all, try asking for an old model that will be cheaply available; if you need a smartphone for something like school, ask for an older model that isn't widely produced anymore.

Warnings

  • Use your cellphone/smartphone responsibly. That means no cyberbullying, sexting, or just being plain rude online.
  • Don't compare yourself to friends or other kids that possess cell phones/smartphones. It'll make it look like you're childish and immature to your parents.
  • Don't get upset and act like a brat when your parents don't get the phone you wanted.
