Cook Popcorn in a Pan
Making popcorn in a pan, the old-fashioned way, results in fresher tasting, healthier popcorn. Make it as a yummy snack for the whole family to enjoy.
Ingredients
- Cooking oil
- Popcorn kernels
Steps
- Pour enough oil to lightly coat the bottom of the pot. Turn on the burner to medium high.
- Place one or two kernels of popcorn into the pot, then place the pot onto the burner. Place the lid onto the pot.
- Wait until you can hear the popcorn pop. This depends on the heat and size of the pan, but is usually between 1 and 5 minutes.
- Once the popcorn has popped, make a light layer of popcorn on the bottom of the pan, not more than one kernel deep.
- Replace the lid and let the popcorn pop.
- Listen for the slowing down of popping, being careful not to burn the popcorn.
- Once it has slowed down sufficiently, remove the pan from the burner and turn off the oven. Pour the popcorn into a bowl, season to your liking, and serve.
Tips
- Only place a layer of popcorn one kernel deep into the pan. Too much and your pan will overflow!
- You can give the pan one or two careful shakes as the popcorn is popping, in order to loosen up more heat and evenly distribute oil.
- Be careful not to place too little or too much oil into the pan. Too little oil and the popcorn won't pop, and too much will result in wet popcorn.
- More popcorn will pop from the kernels than you think. Undercoat the pan with kernels rather than overcoat.
Warnings
- Popcorn and oil can pop out of the pan at you, so wear oven mitts. If you are burned, run the effected spot under cool water.
- The pan gets extremely hot.
