Create a Gravatar

A Gravatar is a "globally recognized avatar" stored by Gravatar.com[1] and automatically associated with your email address by blogs and web forums through special software some sites have in place.[2]

Having a Gravatar can save you a lot of time and trouble decoratively identifying your posts on blogs and other sites. It can also be an important part of "brand you", helping people to instantly spot your online identity across different forums and sites. These steps will get you set up with a Gravatar of your own.

Steps

  1. Visit the Gravatar website to sign up. It's located at: http://gravatar.com. There is a "Create Your Own Gravatar" button.
  2. Enter your email address and click on "Get Your Gravatar".
  3. You will receive a confirmation email. Click on the provided link and you will be able to choose how to input your image.
  4. Crop your image by moving the box that is overlaid on the image you choose. Then click on "Crop and Finish".
  5. Choose an image rating that reflects the content of your avatar.
    • Be aware that the use of an image that is X-rated will automatically prevent you from using it on a number of websites.
  6. Start using it. When you visit websites that enable the avatar, you should now find it appearing as an option when joining or using the website.

Tips

  • WordPress automatically creates a Gravatar for you. If you already have a WordPress account, this will show up when you're trying to create a Gravatar using the same email address as the WordPress account.

Warnings

  • If you choose an "X" rated Gravatar, it will not show up on the majority of sites.
